Armed Resistance

On the Japanese city of Hiroshima in August 1945, a nuclear bomb with a uranium charge was dropped - the United States was the only state that possessed nuclear weapons. In the USSR, extraordinary measures were being taken to speed up work on the atomic project, but to no avail. The reason was simple: there was no uranium in the country. Despite the post-war devastation, already in early 1946, geological exploration parties were organized, the entire territory of the USSR was covered by uranium prospecting works. The hero of the film is a geologist on one of these expeditions. But when his friend dies, his life begins to change.

Dinner

By knowing oneself, a person knows the whole world. Refusal of self-knowledge distances a person from God. What does a woman seek in a man's world? What passionate and vague dreams control her? The painful search for the Ideal in an imperfect world is realized by a love triangle. While men measure their strength in the fight for a woman, her subconscious has already equalized them in weakness, because next to her Ideal, they are both just insignificant shadows. Perhaps the reason for the collapse is the very existence of an abstract Ideal, which inevitably gives rise to a comparative analysis of the surrounding men, and, as a result, the impossibility of choice. The happiness of motherhood for this woman lies in the absence of a reason for comparison, because the child is certainly pure and beautiful.

A Few Thoughts from Our Solitude

Lesha Stolyarov's contemporary art includes bitumen paintings, pictures made of gas burners, abstract art, in short, everything that is incomprehensible to the layman. Recently, Lesha has been going through a creative crisis; he wants to speak about God, but using the artistic means that are unfamiliar to hm. So he decides to make an experiment and travels to the Spaso-Sumorin Monastery in distant Totma to set up an installation amidst the Vologda snows. Only one monk lives in this monastery – Father Feodosiy. Forty years ago, he was a painter but abandoned his craft to serve God. One would think he should be sympathetic to art. However, the ultra-modern artist clashes with an equally "ultra" counterpart – only an orthodox one. Is it possible to reconcile contemporary art and the church, new trends and two-thousand-year-old traditions?

Still Free

A film must confront the world in which it is made, but also the one in which it is shown. When Vadim Kostrov accompanied young couple Katya and Kostya to a nearby lake, and filmed them with the directness for which he is known, he couldn’t foresee the political implications of these images. At the time Kostya was about to join the Russian military – a decision he came to regret later on. It’s breathtaking to witness the film’s playful innocence, while at the same time measuring every word against the destructive nature of war – yet the film outlines more than a political parable: Kostrov reflectively turns towards the few hours of light in the face of an impending darkness, which linger too briefly.
