The Bridge in the Jungle

Gale (Charles Robinson) is an idealistic and naive young hunter who ignores warnings that no one can survive for long in the jungles of Mexico except the native Indians. He tries to hunt crocodiles but becomes delirious, disoriented and nears death. Sleigh (John Huston) is a veteran hunter living among the natives who rescues Gale just in time. As he recovers in the Indian village, Gale listens to Sleigh's denunciation of the evils of modern society (ie. money, greed and oil). Later on, a former native of the village returns from the oil fields of Texas and presents his young brother with a pair of cowboy boots. Proudly wearing his new boots, the boy falls off the wooden bridge into the river and drowns as the boots, symbolic shackles of civilization, fill up with water and pull him beneath the surface. Sleigh and Gale observe the Indians as they recover the body and stage an elaborate funeral for the dead boy

Documentation of Osaka Expo '70

The document, which splices together footage from both Osaka and Montreal, offers a rare comparative insight into the two events. It is believed to have been part of a longer documentary made in collaboration with Masuo Ogawa. These "world’s fairs" were colossal events featuring displays from countries and corporations around the world, providing a testing ground for technologies from IMAX screens to security systems. Despite a culture of ambivalence and resistance surrounding Expo ’70, due to its depoliticized celebration of “progress and harmony for mankind” in the era of U.S.-sponsored conflicts in Asia, the pavilions were often run in collaboration with artists.

The Unwanted

“They come in search of the American Dream, only to find they have become the unwanted,” begins this groundbreaking television documentary on the troubles faced by Latino immigrants in the United States. Amid calls for broader governmental reform of the immigration process, the film focuses on human roles in the everyday drama, casting immigrants’ plight as powerless political pawns in a game that exploits undocumented migrants’ labor while criminalizing them at the same time. As Pablo, Gabriel and Yolanda Lopez and the Garcia family seek to improve their livelihood in a new country, away from economic troubles at home, they face repeated profiling, raids and deportation by border patrol and immigration enforcement officers, creating a revolving door of frustration for all involved.

Charles Mingus: Live at Montreux 1975

Charles Mingus was one of the greatest jazz bassists of all time, but most of all he was an innovative composer and a leader with a clear vision of what he wanted and where his music had to go. In 1975 he made his first appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival, accompanied by musicians who had worked with him on the albums 'Changes One' and 'Changes Two', two milestones of music, from which the pieces performed in the show were taken. At the end of the concert, the band is joined by two special guests: the saxophonist Gerry Mulligan and Benny Bailey on trumpet.

Cross

John Du Cane’s rarely shown films are amongst the most pure and radical of their period. In Cross, he uses the drawing of a cross (made without lifting the pencil) as a model for the camera movements and a score for the film. “The films are very physical, they are polyrhythmic and they are patterned in a manner designed to create a very definite way of seeing, of experiencing ... The films are silent to the extent that there is no soundtrack ... I believe films’ light capable of creating sound ... the films are there to be listened to. They are there to be felt."
