COCKROACH MAN

There's something that's been bothering Sato lately. His cigarettes are dwindling strangely fast. He wonders if he's smoking enough for two people. Or is there someone else smoking? Then he thinks. Is there really no one in the room when I'm not there? Then one day, a man in a pair of briefs appears from the wardrobe. The man, who sometimes tries to fly on the balcony, begins to ask practical questions and give his opinion to Sato, who spends her days in a state of apathy. What is his true identity...? The world stretches out beyond his sight. When he thinks about the overwhelming size of the world, he realises how small he is. Cutting off all contact with the outside world, Sato tries to hide his fear. By using subtitles for his conversations with the man, the film succeeds in expressing his closed world. The humorous touch of the film, depicting a small rebirth that took place over a few days, was made even more striking by the ending theme music.

Sun 100

In 1993, on the 100th anniversary of Mao Zedong’s birth, Wen Pulin mobilized the “Sun 100” series of artistic activities, staging programs at official institutions featuring avant-garde artists in Mao’s hometown, Shaoshan. The film "Sun 100" was intended to be a document of that work, representing the country and the nation thinking about a specific quandary: What is the spiritual heritage that's been left behind by Mao Zedong, if there is any at all? Wen planned for the film to show at the 1994 Hong Kong Film Festival, but withdrew it, and has never finished it, stating that his own views on Mao have shifted. 17 discs worth of footage (roughly 28 hours) from the unfinished film are included in the Wen Pulin Avant-Garde Art Archive held at Cornell University in the U.S.

The Artists of Yuanmingyuan

In the years before 1995, young artists who pursued free creativity came from all over the country to Yuanmingyuan, in the western suburbs of Beijing. These people settled in the rental houses of the village farmers, and then ambitiously bought paint-stretched canvases to explore and create art. The biggest difficulty they face is to make up for the monthly rent to be paid to the landlord. Selling paintings is not their only means of survival; they would also rely on other crafts to maintain their lives. Their works were very different; they have a spirit of rebellion, and they do not conform to traditional aesthetics. This is what caused Sate officials to intervene. (Shot May–December 1995.)

White Clothing: Harakiri

A black and white preface shows a woman in a traditional kimono climbing the stairs as WWII era Mitsubishi Zeros fly through the sky and footage of the Japanese military of the era is superimposed over the footage. She stops at the top of the stairs to say her prayers, rings a bell, and heads inside where the footage is shot in color. She unravels her kimono and rubs her face with the cloth before wrapping her blade and lovingly touching it. She pulls it across her stomach and slits herself open, falling to the mat. She crawls across the mat, dying, slipping in her own slick blood until she can't move anymore.

The Letter

"I sobbed today..." This bizarre monologue is followed by a dialogue with a unique tempo. Then, fragments of daily life are written on the screen in an unhurried manner. When the dialogue and the screen are fused together, there is an exquisite sense of mismatch, and a warm and heart-warming world begins to unfold on the screen. The film is a humorous essay in the form of a letter to a lover, telling the story of an ordinary day, but with a descriptive power that is anything but ordinary.

Sand and Sea

Liu Zeyuan is a farmer on the edge of the desert at the junction of Inner Mongolia and Ningxia. He grows food and raises camels, and his family's annual income is 5,000 yuan. Liu Picheng is a fisherman on Jingwa Island, part of the isolated Liaodong Peninsula; he is unwilling to attract attention and becomes hostile to the camera. The living environment and conditions of these two families are different, but the directors try to find some common ground while expressing the two respective unique lifestyles. In fact, these lives are firmly swayed by nature: sand storms can destroy everything, just as the ocean tide can destroy everything, and for the two protagonists, the difficult grasp of the future and their children also brings them the same loneliness. Filmed in 1989, Sand and Sea received the Grand Prix award from the 1991 Asian Broadcasting and Television Union.
