Almost Home

The film is a resonant portrayal of the younger generation in the post-Umbrella Movement era. Two years ago, Ah-man (Ng Wing-sze), an independent yet stubborn university student, left home after a furious argument with her mum when the Umbrella Movement broke out. Now, she undertakes a new kind of lifestyle – a life of a vegetarian and an organic farmer. However, she never stops thinking of the taste from home. With the film's fragmentary narrative style, Ah-man’s story also reflects the ambivalent decisions between family and society of her friends.

Zero to Macao

A raw and intimate portrait of Vivian Siu, an amateur female racing driver with a burning desire to race the world’s greatest street track, the legendary Macau Grand Prix. Notorious amongst drivers for being the ultimate test of skill and courage, it’s terrifying blind corners and relentless high speed straights, present a unique challenge that has been the making of champions for 70 years. Senna, Schumacher, Hamilton and many other famous names all took on the formidable Guia circuit. Self-funded and with almost zero driving experience, Vivian leapt from junior karting to becoming the first female driver in Formula 4 Chinese Championship within just a few months. But the gulf between reality and her dream became evident on every level and most gave her little chance of success.

Harmony (n.) a consistent, orderly, or pleasing arrangement of parts; congruity. Forgive my nerves— rattling of my subjective coloring and inverted subjects! With a focus on my affinity for the ephemeral, this is in part a remix of left over footage shot and then re-printed on a now defunct and sorely missed Kodak film stock, 7285. A record of my trudging foray into Step-Printing and the indulgence of rediscovering old scraps of images. Conversely, I applied the techniques of Richard Tuohy’s Chromaflex process to weld together then shred apart film scraps guided by an electric pleasure for a visual clash and at moments, harmony. Trailblazers in Habits

'Trailblazers in Habits' is an intimate portrait of a group of American Catholic nuns, the Maryknoll Sisters, who have accompanied the disenfranchised in their struggle for social justice. By turns tragic and joyous, yet always inspirational, this insightful documentary is a revealing portrait of these courageous women. A moving and absorbing chronicle that spans 100 years and several continents, the film celebrates the intelligence and tenacity; the love, compassion and generosity of these early feminists.

Dong

Shenyang, in deep winter snow. Two promising 12-year-old Beijing opera students, Dong (‘winter’ in Chinese) and Nuannuan (literally meaning ‘warmth’) are practising their stage moves diligently and fervently in order to secure their place in an upcoming performance in the capital. Nuannuan has a crush on Dong but Dong is lost in a daze – of a muted longing for his dead mother and a nameless affection for the girl’s young aunt – which unfolds in the juxtaposing scenes of a lone balloon drifting away and a colourful kite soaring into the sky. The train is soon to leave for Beijing, a fond farewell has been bided. Dong has to make his journey, with or without Nuannuan.
