The Haunted High

Another film by the Konaka brothers. There is a tunnel under the school, and Alice, Juri, and Reika get lost in a wonderland. The Men In Black played by Morishita Nittan (wearing rabbit ears) was a sight to behold. The story is about UFOs, but it's an offbeat comedy (what's a "school ghost story"?). The naming of the character, along with the genius gamer Mihime Goto from "Yokai Teke Teke", was carried over to "Alice 6", and was also repeated in the Glams game "Alice in Cyberland". - Alice 6 Chiaki J. ガードレール

A sound only she can hear, a girl only I can see. One night, Maki, a psychology major at university, meets a girl crouched by a guardrail. One night, Maki, a psychology student at university, meets a girl crouched beside a guardrail who tells him she hears the sound of the guardrail. However, when her friend comes to check on her after hearing Maki's story, he does not see the girl. When the girl regains her memory, Maki begins to understand who she really is... By interweaving a sound story and an episode of psychoanalysis, the film succeeds in turning a love story with a ghost into a serious psychic fantasy. The fragility of Kyoko Akiyama as the ghost makes the film even more compelling.

June 30, 1997 (aka Celebrate What?)

"June 30, 1997. Hong Kong. Tourists flocked to expensive gourmet parties with a harbor view, or got drunk on the streets, embracing British or Communist flags. All media coverage described how happy the local Hong Kong people were about being taken over the next day. I was invited to a private gathering at Hong Kong Arts Centre to watch television and the fireworks together. It turned out to be a gathering of local artists singing sad songs and telling angry stories, against a room decorated in words of bright red: 'Reversion 1997: I am very happy.' Later I went to the Central part of town to find thousands of people rallying in Victoria Square. At midnight they released multi-color balloons, tied a huge yellow ribbon around the Legislative Council, where the directly elected Democratic Legislators were being kicked out, as of July 1. The action was illegal in the new Hong Kong law. The police blocked the area around the Council soon afterwards, calling it 'private property.'"

田舎町的朝

Goodbye, two-country towns. Shuhei and Midori, two poor siblings without parents, manage to live together in a small apartment but have long been urged by their aunt in Tokyo to move in with them. The younger sister is reluctant, the older brother gives up. A small incident occurs between them that makes them aware of the opposite sex, and their respective summers pass. And the day they leave for Tokyo is the day of a summer festival in the country town where the siblings were born and raised. The film's direction has the ability to plant the emotions and background of each of them firmly on the screen with everyday movements and straightforward dialogue. The level of acting by the actors is high. It was a summer when we felt cool with barley tea and watermelon instead of air-conditioning. The same nostalgia and vitality are present throughout the film.

Homemade Movie

Using his family members and friends as cast, independent filmaker Fumiki Watanabe has brought a drama to the screen which opens a window into the daily lives of modern Japanese living in provincial towns. In the story, (Fumiki is a tutor to junior high students. In Japan, the pressure on pre-college-age students to excel in their studies is so intense that after-school tutors have a very important role in the culture, and tutoring is a respected full-time profession. The tutor is bored with his marriage, and has a liaison with the parent of one of his girl students. At the same time, his son is going out with his new mistress' girl, and as a result of this, the situation rapidly becomes very confusing, and Fumiko is unable to hide this pecadillo satisfactorily.
