The Island of the Dead is a film about the demise of the Russian Epocha Modern. The symbol of this culture was the legendary Russian film star Vera Kholodnaya, who evoked a poetic image of the young urban woman on the silver screen. Her death in 1919, shrouded in tragedy and mystery, put a symbolic end to the pre-Revolutionary period. The Island of the Dead is composed of fragments from numerous films from this period, juxtaposed with other contemporary artistic expressions such as music and painting. Kovalov shows convincingly how the fragile beauty of the Russian Epocha Modern had to make way for the pressure of Futurism, Constructivism and other 'progressive trends', and how these '-isms' were then also relegated to the melting pot to be remoulded by totalitarian norms.

Sometime in the movie, the movie shifts to Antarctica from the Volga, where Monroe-Orlova is looking at the fascinating life of penguins.

During the offensive of the Soviet troops, the Germans decide to eliminate the prisoners of war. Before the execution, General Vlasov arrives in a German concentration camp, who agitates to join the ROA. Pugachev and his comrades decide to escape.

The Donetsk Airport, Ukraine. Rebuilt in 2012, but now a scene of utter devastation - shortly after Russian-backed separatists have taken it over. They dream of meeting this event in the family circle. Children come, but real family reunification costs the heroes much more. The comet is getting closer, and you have to have time to say everything, but the most important words turn into insults.

The group studies and performs karachay-balkarian folklore. Gollu is a traditional dance for vernal equinox. The band's name is a metaphor because just like spring is the time for revival, Gollu revive, reinterpret and develop traditional culture of their nation. The connecting thread of this film is legend about debate of person and devil. Fragments of the legend are followed by live performances and footages from archive shooting and all of that create a difficult metaphorical drama about journey from darkness to the light.
