Wing Sum, a little girl frequently neglected by her mother, is sent to her grandmother's mansion for a temporary stay on a stormy night. There begins a series of queer events. First there is a power outage, then her grandmother reveals her most well kept secret: she is a cannibal all along, and tonight she is having her grand daughter for dinner. Chased by a maniacal cannibal in her own territory, there is seemingly no escape for Wing Sum. She is however miraculously rescued by the queerest turn of events.

Mr. Wong and his students take shelter in a house during a storm, where the caretaker, Uncle Fook, tells a ghost story. Long ago, cousins Bai Yunfeng and Bai Deqing rescued a singer, Qin Chuxiang. Both loved her, but Chuxiang only loved Yunfeng. Deqing, jealous, convinced Yunfeng’s father, Bai Yinzong, to break up the couple by arranging Yunfeng’s marriage to a cousin. However, Chuxiang was pregnant, so the Emperor agreed to their marriage. On the wedding day, Chuxiang’s mother revealed that she and Yunfeng were siblings. Deqing then bribed locals to accuse them of incest, and they were nearly drowned. Mr. Wong’s group realizes Yunfeng and Chuxiang survived and had pretended to be ghosts for years. Yinzong exposes Deqing’s plot, and Yunfeng and Chuxiang finally marry.

Tong Siu-wah is jobless. Tong shares a room with Chi-on. His neighbour Lai-ping is a factory worker. Another neighbour Siu-kuen is Manager Chin's mistress-to-be. Siu-wah never bumps into them. Siu-kuen is forced to be a mistress to pay back her family debts. Chin is about to marry Siu-kuen as his mistress. Lai-ping and Siu-kuen are friends and Lai-ping wants to help her. Lai-ping meets her penpal and find out that Siu-wah him. They teach each other to trick their flatmates. Lai-ping puts a fake snake in his room. Siu-wah puts pins on her bed. The two eventually realized who each other is. Lai-ping helps Siu-kuen pay off her debt and not marry Manager Chin. Chi-on discovers that his boss' husband is Siu-kuen's husband-to-be. Chi-on reveals the truth to Mrs. Chin. Chin cancels the marriage. Lai-ping and Siu-wah become a couple.

Three months after regaining her sight, Ah Ai becomes addicted to other things and begins an affair with groom Alan (Chu Weida), subsequently becoming a masseuse. Mingjun resolves to heal the infatuated Ah Jie's legs, allowing him to regain a healthy physique and redeem his "true love" with Ah Ai. However, unpredictable circumstances persist, and at Alan's instigation, Ah Ai shoots Ah Jie's legs in the head. In the accident, the gunfire also blinds , causing her to bleed profusely.

Cold Nights features great performances by both Pak Yin as a tough minded “new woman”, Shusheng, and Ng Cho-fan as her weak husband, Wang Wenxuan, whose spirits have been crushed by the Sino-Japanese war.
