Manfred Durniok (1934-2003), German film director and producer, shot his first short documentary films in the 1950s and 1960s. At the end of the 50s he got to know Oskar Sala (1910-2002) and took advantage of the composers electro-acoustic and musical skills in many of his subsequent black and white motion pictures. Thus, Durniok could concentrate on images and editing sequences of his movies without having to worry about live sound. The soundtrack subsequently created by Sala has always been a free, electronically-abstract composition with a strong rhythmic and tonal reference to sequence and image content.

Incident in a Glass Blower's Shop

UCLA Student Film. "Like a carefully crafted short story, this psychological tale of the terrifying, unsettled personality of a superficially calm man evokes an atmosphere of loneliness and suspense by means of fine acting, definitive editing, and outstanding lighting effects. There is a fascination about the soundless man who gazes at his glasswork while various hues of light play over his impassive face and by the violence of his destruction, made all the more terrifying by the squealing and scurrying of rats"--The booklist.

Community Control (Newsreel #24)

This film documents one of the most important struggles for education in the sixties. In 1968, under intensive community pressure from Black and Latino communities, the State of New York chose three New York City school districts to become part of an experiment in community-run education. In Ocean Hill-Brownsville, the community board requested the reassignment of several teachers perceived as racists. The request brought the wrath of the United Federation of Teachers, city and state bureaucracies, and ultimately a citywide teacher's strike.

Eros, O Basileus

Structured in nine tableaux each a study of a simple action or situation involving a lone, naked figure, the blind Eros, searching for fulfilment, for self. The objects he touches - books, paintings - can be seen as icons of the creative spirit; there is also a motor cycle and film equipment. In succeeding scenes he appears to try on identities offered by institutional doctrines of religion and social traditions of (overt) masculinity. Much of the film was constructed in-camera with a small amount of editing afterwards. An innovation was the use of in-camera fade-outs as phrase markers, not as terminal points, within a single set-up or shot.
