In Russian - "Special Military Operation", in Nanai - "War"

The Nanaisky district, situated on the northeastern banks of the Amur River, lies northeast of Khabarovsk. The Nanai people are among the indigenous communities of the Far East, numbering approximately 12 thousand in Russia. Andrei Beldy, a cultural advocate for the Nanai community residing in the village of Naikhin, expresses concern about the fading of traditions and the Nanai language. Only a few hundred individuals can speak it fluently, with local children receiving instruction from an enthusiastic linguist from Veliky Novgorod. Beldy recounts the historical displacement of Nanais to Sakhalin during Stalin's era to populate the former Japanese territory. He criticizes the current authorities for restricting free fishing, a traditional occupation for the Nanai people. Most villages lack access to gas, and timber is exported abroad. With the onset of the war in Ukraine, many Nanai residents, including the elderly and deceased, received conscription notices.

ЮДИ: Танец в темноте

The full-length documentary film “YUDI: Dance in the Dark” tells the story of three people from an orphanage who, in pursuit of the dream of performing on stage, organized their own dance team, YUDI, in the Siberian city of Tomsk. Subsequently, they became finalists in the projects “Minute of Fame” on Channel One in 2007, “Britain’s Got Talent” in 2015 and “America’s Got Talent” in 2018. The film shows in detail the formation of the team and the entire behind-the-scenes life of the main characters, where, in addition to victories and performances with stars on the same stage, there were also personal dramatic moments. The story of the main characters serves as motivation for the younger generation and proves that success on the world stage can be achieved even while in a remote region of Russia.

Between The Lines

2017 - I am travelling to Russia with a German tour group. I take the diary of Wehrmacht soldier Buff, killed in action in 1942 when he tried to give first aid to a Russian soldier, as my travel reading. Our itinerary intersects with places where he fought. I grew up in Russia. My grandmother toiled in Stalin's camps. 2022 - the conflict that Russia's attack on Ukraine triggered in me runs through the film. The journey to Russia was characterised by encounters between people whose parents' or grandparents' had common experiences - those of the Second World War. In brief moments of rapprochement, many questions remain unanswered - especially about the purpose of war.

Fathers by Blood

Relatives of soldiers killed in Russia’s war against Ukraine are entitled to compensation — insurance payments, regional grants, and so-called “presidential” benefits. Altogether, the sum amounts to around 14 million rubles, divided among the closest family members. This film tells the stories of three women — Oksana Nazarenko from Karachay-Cherkessia, Natalia Makarova from St. Petersburg, and Anastasia Yudina from the Leningrad region. They are taking the fathers of their sons to court over the payouts, arguing that these men did not raise the children and were absent from their lives after divorce. For us, this is not a film about money, but about the psychology of many Russian families — where the figure of an absent father was replaced by cadet “brotherhood,” and poverty was compensated by the dream of a military career for a child.

Unbearably Loud

This film tells the stories of five Russian families who have lost children, mothers, fathers, and grandchildren to shelling. What secret memories do they hold of their departed loved ones? Who do they hold responsible for these deaths? And how do they view the world now? These are the heartfelt monologues of people who have endured the unthinkable yet still retain their capacity for compassion. In this moment, nothing is more important than their words. Over the two years of military action in Ukraine, the UN estimates that more than 10,000 civilians have died—and the shells continue to claim lives every day. Novaya journalists are unable to access Ukrainian territory due to censorship and cannot fully tell the stories of what is happening there.

Secret Whispers Of Arambol

“Arambol is a lush tropic tourist destination in the state of Goa in India. It also accommodates for the season (November to March) international contact improvisation community and practitioners of other art forms. In this project, we wanted to explore sides of Arambol that were lost, abandoned, and forgotten. Me (Ivan) and Alaya share two dance languages: contact improvisation and butoh and we were curios to see what spirits and stories can be born from our chemistry. This movie had no script and was fully improvised on the spot.

Non-Silk Road

Silk Road Mountain Race is one of the most difficult multi-day cycling races, the route of which runs through the mountains of Kyrgyzstan: about two thousand kilometers at temperatures from +40 to -15 and with a total climb of 30 thousand meters. The extreme Silk Road attracts cyclists from all over the world, but not everyone manages to overcome it on full self-sufficiency. In 2023, two guys from Moscow, Maxim Lapchuk and Sasha Antipov, decided to test themselves and go on this journey. One of them had been preparing for it for three years, the other decided in a week, without going into details. In Peter Barabaki's film, they tell how it was, and invite the viewer to speculate with them on the question of how people come to realize a big dream — how much recklessness, heroism and risk there is in this, and in the end is it worth it.

Broke Loose and Got Hung on a Rope

The filming of this movie – the story of Russia’s oldest homeless charity “Nochlezhka” – began in January 2022. At the beginning of February 2022, work was underway on the script, and then February 24th happened and all ideas and filming, like many other things, lost their meaning. Two years later, it seemed important to to return to that time, look at ourselves and the country back then, and realize how the ideas and meanings that seemed significant to us had completely changed 24 months later. Or simply ceased to exist.
