Love Hurts

Sam is a shy, mysterious and inconspicuous teenage girl, who falls in love with Troy, leader of an ultraviolent teenage gang, who does not feel physical pain, nor knows what love is. Together, against everyone and everything, they will face a series of obstacles trying to separate them, meanwhile figuring out what love and pain are. Debuting at Curtas, French filmmaker Elsa Rysto presents a love story mediated by ultraviolence, in a modern variation on the classic story of Bonnie and Clyde – or of the more contemporary Mickey and Mallory from “Natural Born Killers”. “Love Hurts” is a simple yet sensitive narrative about the so-called growing pains.

Trees, a Global Superpower

Humanity would not exist without trees. They are the backbone of the biosphere, fertilizing the earth, regulating the climate and water cycles, indispensable to our survival on earth. But just as science is starting to understand the true importance of this little-known genius, its very existence is menaced by man-made disruption. This film provides a science-based exploration into the superpowers of trees, a first-of-its-kind journey below the surface, to better understand them, and also the challenge that we face together in the struggle against global warming – a journey into a new dimension.

Mingus Erectus

Music can change the lives of those who listen to it. This was the case for author Noël Balen, who was inspired to write a collection of poems, accompanied by a record, as a tribute to legendary double bassist Charles Mingus. A genuine work of art, this documentary filmed in black and white hooks us into the bewitching world of jazz. Artists and singers give voice to Balen’s poems, accompanied by the immortal music of Mingus. A dazzling musical voyage, as bold as it is inventive.

Titanic: Into the Heart of the Wreck

The Titanic is under a new threat. Resting at over 12,500 feet below sea level and 380 nautical miles off the coast of Newfoundland, the most famous shipwreck in the world is being consumed by a colony of iron-eating bacteria. This slow and irreversible decay, according to the most concerned experts, will sweep away all the secrets of the mythic liner within a few decades. This documentary details the underwater odyssey of the greatest Titanic expeditions and the evolution of the most scrutinized shipwreck in the world. From the epic discovery of the wreck by a French-American team in 1985 to the exploratory missions led by James Cameron, and to the treasure hunts that brought back over 5,000 vestiges–experience the unequaled thrill of these extreme dives through the eyes of the explorers who have attempted to unlock Titanic’s secrets.

Dora Maar: Between Light and Shade

Elusive, unconventional, on a quest for the absolute: painter and photographer Dora Maar left a unique and still largely under-appreciated body of work behind her. Maar’s extraordinary life saw her working alongside the greatest names in the Parisian art scene; she was also the lover of Picasso and the wife of Georges Bataille. Toppling conventions and shattering norms, Dora Maar breathed strength and character back into the image of 20th-century women. Hailed by critics, this film is an intimate portrayal that handles its subject with skill and sensitivity.

Pingouin & Goéland et leurs 500 petits

It is the story of a couple who could not have children and who had hundreds. This is the story of Yvonne and Roger Hagnauer, whom everyone called Goéland et Pingouin. It is the story of intellectuals, anarchists, pacifists, trade unionists, feminists. This is the story of a couple of resistance fighters that some wanted to believe were collaborators. This is the story of the Sèvres children's home, a unique experience of freedom, education and openness to the world. And that's a bit of my story, since my mother, saved by this couple, spent in this house all her childhood.

Nightmayer

One of Great Britain’s most distinguished climbers, Steve McClure has spent the last few decades scaling cliffs and crags all over the world. In spite of his globetrotting status, he likes nothing more than to tackle challenges on the rock walls of his home country. This is how, after sending Rainman in Malham in 2017, he became one of only a handful of people to climb 9b. In 2019, he finally settled a long overdue score by onsighting Nightmayer, a hard, complex, and committing route!

Fedayin, the fight of Georges Abdallah

A leading figure in the Palestinian cause and the fight against imperialism, the Lebanese communist activist Georges Ibrahim Abdallah had been languishing in French prisons for thirty-eight years—a unique case in France. Arrested in Lyon in 1984 with false papers, he was sentenced two years later to four years in prison for possession of weapons and explosives, then in 1987 received a life sentence for complicity in the assassinations in Paris five years earlier of an Israeli Mossad agent and an American military attaché—charges he has always denied. Although he has been eligible for release since 1999, French political authorities, under pressure from the United States and Israel, opposed his release. Interventions by Palestinian figures, his relatives, his lawyer and ex-prisoners from the extreme left, retrace the journey of the village schoolteacher who became an anti-colonial activist.
