False Belief

The love story of a couple caught up in the gentrification of a neighborhood that is wiping out a seminal African-American cultural legacy and displacing its original residents. After giving a statement to the police about being harassed by his neighbor in Harlem, D. was arrested, prosecuted, and imprisoned. But for what exactly? His arrest initiated a journey over the course of which D.’s faith in the American justice system put everything he cherished in life at risk.

(eye, virus)

Through an experimental collage of video and pictographs, (eye, virus) explores how conversations around disclosure, stigma, and harm reduction shift across generations and from public to private realms. Combining street interviews with footage from a punk show and a mobile testing site, the video centers pleasure and community as it expands the conversation around HIV to include hepatitis C and the opioid epidemic. (eye, virus) extends from documentation of a 2017 public program titled AIDS OS Y Version 10.11.6, and is collaboratively produced with Nikki Sweet. Commissioned by Visual AIDS in 2019 as part of STILL BEGINNING, a program of seven short videos responding to the ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Brotherhood of Skiing

In 1973, being a black skier was a lonely endeavor, one that came with racism and alienation. That year, the National Brotherhood of Skiers formed as a way to bring black skiers together to ski, celebrate and build community. With its annual summits and thriving youth organizations, the NBS has grown into a well-loved ski establishment. Along with torching the myth that black people don’t ski, the NBS continues to engender the next generation of black skiers. “It’s a beautiful sport,” one young participant says. “And I wish it was more accessible to everyone. I guess that’s where our ski club comes in.”

you're a plant whisperer and for me, it's enough

you’re a plant whisperer and for me, it’s enough studies the materiality of the analog image and the relationship between the musicality of the image and sound, in an attempt to create an introspective atmosphere. The video consists of two monochromatic shots generated using a VHS video mixer, each combining with a figurative image shot on Super 8 film. Treating colour as a conductor of emotions, all the images evoke inaccessibility, perfection and dream, in parallel with a meditative and transcendent soundtrack.
