The Ghost of Monk's Island Part Seven Ordeal by Fire

This short film on the waters of Switzerland does not show conventional landscapes. Without literary commentary, only by means of image, rhythm and music, it tries, on the contrary, to make the life of an element, water.

Motel operator Ann Porter and bar owner Dan Mullins decide to set up a key club to satisfy sexually their clientele. The club's membership consists largely of married people seeking extramarital sexual excitement. Inhibitions are cast aside and some unexpected results are achieved: Bob and Patti, a married couple who have independently joined the club, by chance receive matching room keys; and their encounter revitalizes their their faltering marriage. Meanwhile, some of the married women discover that they are sexually attracted to other women. Ann and Donn eventually throw a party for their clients. The members indulge their individual sexual preferences and all goes well until the husband of a participant, Sharon, makes an unexpected appearance and begins to beat her. Bob tries to intervene and he is accidentally killed by the jealous husband. The police then raid the party and break up the key club.

Alfred Leslie's Birth of a Nation 1965 consisted of separate plays drawing upon the words of O'Hara and the writing of the Marquis de Sade.

One of Lawrence Jordan's earliest animated films, PINK SWINE is an energetic and playful mix of various animation styles. Described as "an anti-art dada collage film," this free-form short presents cut-out images animated across old photos (a style picked up by Terry Gilliam a few years later) and found objects that dance to the beat of the rock-and-roll soundtrack. He produced this short during a summer spent with Joseph Cornell and Jordan edited the film entirely in camera, making the upbeat visual rhythm of this delightful lark even more impressive. –Sean Axmaker

Manfred Durniok (1934-2003), German film director and producer, shot his first short documentary films in the 1950s and 1960s. At the end of the 50s he got to know Oskar Sala (1910-2002) and took advantage of the composers electro-acoustic and musical skills in many of his subsequent black and white motion pictures.

Using hand-painted film, animation and an inventive soundtrack, INTRODUCTION TO OOBIELAND is an exploration of gateways: a repeated series of movements from the familiar and safe to the unknown and dangerous. Cycles are left incomplete. Chases are never consummated; the day ends with no promise of rebirth. In this way the film touches on our oldest instincts, leaving us saddened and scared by the knowledge of a world that will never know freedom through the completion of action; safety through the sanctification of place.
