Kharis and Brindelune, two half-sister enemies, members of the same Parisian private detective agency, embark on a road-movie through the Mayenne region of France aboard an antique side-car. One of them has just been fired from the RAID following a blunder, the other, an inveterate blunderer, seems to have badly controlled superpowers. During this picaresque odyssey, often bordering on the burlesque, Kharis and Brindelune will meet Lionel and Arthur, two Solex enthusiasts absorbed in an improbable quest worthy of the Knights of the Round Table, as well as Pauline, an extravagant young woman around whom an unspeakable threat hovers.

“Mathuật” is a combination of the artist’s name, Maithu, and the Vietnamese word for magic, ma thuật, while MMRBX is an acronym for the working term memory box. The work metaphorically associates the Vietnamese ritual of caring for the dead with an allegorical and virtual memory box that stores mnemonic moving images. Heavily contextualized within Southeast and East Asian mythology, where communication with the dead is an integral part of everyday life, Mathuật – MMRBX aims to excavate the wounded past of survivor diasporas (Việt Kiều) that remains invisible to most communities. The artist believes that in a world suffering from postcolonial amnesia, we resist by remembering, as it is impossible for the ghosts and spirits of historical traumas to rest in peace. Bùi aims to establish an archive of personal memories and transgenerational traumas that allows the Vietnamese diaspora to formalize a story of their own.

Across a two-channel video installation, voice, image, and sound combine to produce a meditative exploration into the story of a man named Cowboy. His background is marked by migration and shaped by his love for the equestrian, as he recounts a lifetime spent in service to horses. On the right channel we see the leaves of a palm tree rustling against a blue sky, alternated with images of the ocean. On the left, we follow the protagonist as he tends to and rides his horse. The strength and autonomy of the animal finds a compliment in the rider - a mutual responsibility develops and each grows to intuit movements of the other. As Cowboy reaches the sea, the two screens sonically coalesce. The cargo ships in the far distance are a reminder of the global economic trade central to Nigeria’s past and its future – as well as darker histories of exploitation, undocumented migration, and the shadow of forced displacement amid the transatlantic slave trade.
