This Desolate Shore

In early 2021, a machine intelligence spent two days watching several films by the legendary director Jean-Luc Godard. Starting with a blank slate, the A.I. used these films to learn about our visual world for the first time. Later, a separate A.I. was used to write the poetry heard in the narration. It is presented verbatim, edited only for length. To complete the experiment a live action narrative, shot in vintage 16mm, was wrapped around this otherwise A.I. generated film. With machine-generated imagery and narration, the film gives us a glimpse into our world as seen by a new intelligence of our own design.

Joy: One Mother Two Families

How would you feel if you were a mother of two families? A mother of a human family and of a wild family that decided thousands of years ago to live hidden, forever, in the heart of the forest. This is the story of Joy, a young ranger who combines the education of her two children, Favour and Abie, with her commitment for the protection of the only family of mountain gorillas that lives in the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda. A family called Nyakagezi, formed by 9 of the approximately last 1,000 mountain gorillas still living in freedom on our planet. Day after day, Joy and her colleagues ensure the safety of these 9 great primates, preventing poaching from ending the lives of those with whom we share 98% of our DNA. So that tomorrow Favour and Abie can meet their brothers, the mountain gorillas, and inherit their mother’s legacy.

Monteverdi: L'Orfeo

Considered to be one of the first operas in history, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo (1607) re-enacts the tragic Greek saga of Orpheus and Euridice. In an attempt to bring his dead bride, Euridice, back to life, Orpheus descends to the underworld. But he fails to fulfil one vital condition: Orpheus is not allowed to look back at Euridice when she follows him back to the living world. Since he cannot prevent himself from turning around, his bride is forced to return to the world of the dead. Orpheus loses himself in the violence of grief, suffering but also growing and finally coming to a new and deeper understanding of himself. Called ‘a fable in music’ by Monteverdi, L’Orfeo was one of the most frequently performed operas of its era and is a magical introduction to Monteverdi’s probing investigation of human nature, character and desire by means of music.

Whiteface

Over recent years, Breitz has collected and archived a wide range of found footage fragments that document ‘white people talking about race.’ Her archive includes the voices of prominent political figures, news anchors and talk show hosts, as well as those of lesser known and anonymous YouTube bloggers, covering white perspectives that run the gamut from neo-Nazi ideology and far right propaganda to everyday racism and the posturing of ‘good white people.’ Whiteface, Breitz appropriates and ventriloquizes dozens of voices drawn from this archive, channelling them through her own white body.
