Carlos Kleiber: I am Lost to the World

Austrian classical conductor Carlos Kleiber (1930-2004) was as eccentric and reclusive as he was brilliant, persistently and obstreperously declining to participate in the international music community or business. This set him apart from his more public contemporaries, such as Herbert von Karajan. This biographical documentary attempts to resolve the ambiguities surrounding Kleiber. The product of exhaustive research, it features rare performance footage of Kleiber leading orchestras, and draws on interviews with individuals who knew and worked with the maestro, including Otto Schenk, Riccardo Muti, Michael Gielen and Ioan Holdender. Carlos Kleiber also turns up to conduct a series of illustrative musical excerpts.

Rising Fall

Rising Fall is a three-part study on nature as its spectacle, on what Spinoza termed natura naturans, or “nature naturing.” Something happens without the need of a guiding agent. Filmic images are content to quietly watch and listen and wait. And they expect the same of how they are observed. In other words an immanence of nature confiding a secret. This involves movements that are visible, and more importantly audible, though they are not conspicuous in an ordered existence. Possible reasons are that they are too insignificant and evidence too little form, an insufficient amount of purpose. However, alternations, even metamorphoses take place, and they tell their own stories, of those occasional events that do not include humankind, which are fully independent of it.

The End Time

Melhus refers to two events, the 1969 moon landing and the Vietnam War (1955-1975),which received worldwide media attention.

Wellen aus Licht

Twelve-year-old Frida is almost blind; she can only make out contours, shadows and colors. At the same time, she can "see" much more than other people. She believes that with the energy we all have within us, we can achieve things that we thought were impossible. In Dear Darkness, we see how she puts this into practice. Frida is lovingly encouraged by her parents, whom we see in the background as they invite her to experience a sculpture or go swimming with her. Frida has an entirely unique view of the world, from which she occasionally takes a distance so she can listen, feel and think. To do so she seeks out complete darkness, because only if there are no visual stimuli can she find peace. In this way, she hardly differs from her sighted peers-and this is why part of the film takes place in the dark.

Future Past Perfect Pt. 01 (Sononda)

sononda is the first part of the short film series future past perfect and was originally recorded in 2006. the series whose single fragments are supposed to be parts of a larger scale film project is designed as a row of conceptually independent movies that document nicolai's focus of interest of the respective year of origin and also builds up on the results of the movie(s) before. despite sononda's visual quality seems artificial at times, it was shot in a natural environment. the focus is directed on the sculptural quality of light. the correspondence of both music - with its low frequency modulations and merging soundscapes - and light play on the curved surfaces of the sculptural stone formations create an ever-changing atmosphere of concrete and abstract appearances.
