Resistance Sahara

Resistance Sahara, a haunting yet playful exploration of the liminal space between experimental, documentary, and fictive filmmaking, presents an artistic response to the Sahrawi refugee crisis from the frozen war in Western Sahara. Bringing international artists from a mix of disciplines to the Sahara Desert, and with them will create something new, a response to what they encounter. The film mix testimony from the mouths of the people who live in each zone of crisis with music; image; and symbolism. The audience is invited to reconsider their view of the nature of human suffering, and to build a new bridge of empathy with the people in these remote and sometimes forgotten places..

Sub Rosa

Samson is a closeted gay teenager whose biggest fear is people finding out about his secret. After his horrifying first sexual experience Samson finds himself at a crossroads. As he's not ready to come out as gay to his best friend, Eleanor, he resorts to lying to her potentially ruining their friendship. As we get to see him try to mend his friendship with Eleanor, we start to see the reasons behind his sexually confused state of mind: his relationship with religion, having an absent father, the social pressure from his friends to lose his virginity, the shame from having lied to everyone he knows for years and even attraction towards his step-father.

FRACTURED LANDSCAPE

Fractured Landscape explores a space that exists on the edges; a space between the wild and urban, between my inner self and my outer world. I find a sense of belonging in nature; a space where I can rest and return to myself, away from the restlessness of urban life and the fractious relationship I feel towards our social structures. For me, the marshland landscape embodies that personal experience. It is rich in nature, yet the urban environment is ever present, pushing at its edges. A reminder that I’ve not left that world, or that part of me, behind.

Prayers for Roadkill

In Simnett’s stop motion animation film and intricate sculptures depicting hybrid human-animal creatures, she wields the aesthetic of vintage children’s television programming, soft play areas, and modernist asylums to explore the emotional and material entanglements of love and cruelty. To create the characters in her film, Simnett not only literally reanimates roadkill but reclaims – and thereby empowers – the image of the animal to plumb the depths of some of the darkest, most fundamental aspects of being human.

Teslaism: Economics After the End of the End of the Future

Teslaism is a 3rd person-racing musical game featuring Elon Musk and his self-driving car/lover and life coach, as they drive towards a shareholder meeting in a post-gamified Berlin landscape. The film takes the newly built Gigafactory in Berlin as a prism to describe the emergence of Teslaism (succeeding Post-Fordism) as an upgrade to the system of production and consumption predicated on advanced storytelling, financial worldbuilding, and imagineering »the look of the future«.

Father Earth

Father Earth is the true story of one man’s attempt to help save the planet, by converting a derelict church on the Orkney Isles into an eco friendly recording studio. It’s also a fascinating study of a psychological power struggle between a character comedian – Graham Fellows, and his long-standing creation – John Shuttleworth. Father Earth is also about family relationships – specifically between fathers and sons – and it explores the paradox: how in the battle against extinction we are often distracted by personal and family issues, as they appear more important and pressing than the future of the planet. Funny yet moving, and filmed mainly in the Orkney Isles over a 10 year period, Father Earth is Graham Fellows’ most thoughtful and accomplished movie to date. Previous work includes It’s Nice Up North filmed by Martin Parr (2004) and Southern Softies (2008)

Moire / Écume

The moire designates the fabric obtained by the mechanical process invented by the Lyon manufacturer Tignat in 1843. This process consists of a partial crushing of the fabric by calendering by folding the fabric on itself. The weft then deviates, and, losing its original shape, offers to the light new reflective surfaces, alternating waves and matt and shiny stripes. It also designates by extension the visual effect (moiré) similar to the one caused by this textile (changing brightness, wavy and shimmering appearance). Scum: 1. whitish foam that forms on the surface of agitated, heated or fermenting liquids. 2. impurities, slag that floats on the surface of molten metals.

Lettre à l'enfant que tu nous as donné

How do we protect our connection with young people? This is the question the film tries to answer by addressing them directly through a voice-over. In a mosaic of fiction and animation sequences, film excerpts, "smartphone" shots and a considerable amount of archive material, the film restores entire sections of our History and our current events, by looking back at some of the major political and social achievements that young people often ignore. "Letter to the child you gave us" aims at inciting them to measure the importance of laws, the stake of democracy, and to push them to the commitment until fighting abstention.
