A woman from a bourgeois family marries a loveless man. She remembers (or dreams?) a life of adventure and smuggling, hijacking ships at night. She is kidnapped by the leader of the enemy gang, with whom she falls in love.

Composed of various extracts of historical films, such as the Eisensteinian battleship, intercut with stairways of various sorts; the unceasing use of negatives persecuted by positives and vice versa; a cinematic-theatrical dialogue between philosophical doubling and filmic doubling.

SPACECUT makes the frame a very strong culminating structure. Every frame is different, yet the almost half hour assembly of images results in a picture of one place being filmed. SPACECUT has two sections, the second being the frame composite, whereas the first consists of long takes. Within the swirling, fleeting frames the eye receives picture after picture like an enormous, exciting puzzle. Strangely enough, it receives it only by absorption - of the sky, trees, valley, rocks, shadows. The automatic retention of these flashes gives you a sense of being in this bowl of land made by the golddiggers in 1871. You might think that this use of single frames would hurt the eye, but in fact it does not. Rather the experience is one of total relaxation. (Stephen Dwoskin)

The man’s voice is progressively intensified by an instrumental accompaniment, which increases in density and richness, before the whole thing gradually fades out. Dwoskin’s film was produced to be shown during the premiere of Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London in December 1972. For Dwoskin, it represents “… the singing voice of the last days of a London drunk (anonymous) as the orchestra raises him to heaven. The faint ghost image of a figure swims gradually to you through the grains of film low light…”

Ange leaves New York to fly to his native Corsica. His mother is dying and Ange, who was not present when his father died, wishes to be present at her death. In Corsica Ange finds his brother Baptiste who married Maria, the woman he loved. He finds out that his father was killed, but nobody wants to tell him the name of the killer.
