The film focuses on a mother (Chen Yanyan) burdened by guilt after abandoning her newborn daughter in a long lane 17 years earlier, so that she could adopt a son to fulfil the traditional belief that only a male heir could continue the family line. However, when her adopted son (King Hu) becomes a disappointment, the mother’s regret deepens. On her deathbed, she confesses her secret to her husband (Wang Yin), who resolves to find their lost daughter.

Li Meixin rejects Du Ziping's marriage proposal on the eve of Du's departure to further his studies in Japan. Li joins a travelling troupe under Jin Shiming and becomes a success overnight. While performing in Singapore, Li discovers she is pregnant. For the sake of Li and the unborn child, Jin marries Li. Due to financial losses, Jin's troupe is disbanded. Du returns from Japan and is invited to play the male lead opposite Li in a new troupe. Caught in a dilemma, Li dies in a fall while running away from Du.

From Boat People (1982) to Our Time Will Come (2017), from family struggles to anti-Japanese history, Venice Career Golden Lion-winning auteur Ann Hui finally films a topic she holds most dear – poetry. Through her personal encounters with some of Hong Kong’s most notable poets, Hui shows the topography of contemporary poetry on and of the city. Two poles of reality, the unrestrained Huang Canran and the cosmopolitan Liu Wai-tong, are juxtaposed to reveal two distinctively different personalities, ideals, and ways of life. Seeing the late Xi Xi recite her own poem about the old Kai Tak Airport is a deeply heart-warming moment.

A collection of short films by five Thai directors imagining their country ten years into the future.

Mr. Lee, a senior social worker, has been fed up with all sorts of social problems that cannot be resolved. He wants to resign after passing his expertise to the new comer, Candy. However, because of lack of manpower, he is asked to handle multiple special cases before he leaves, including mildly retarded Ha, Po with Down syndrome, schizophrenic Ming, Chung with serious autism and Keung with hyperactivity disorder. While Lee and Candy engage themselves in handling those difficult cases, Mrs. Lee, who has been suffering from serious mood disorder, commits suicide. Heavily blown, Lee abandons himself and decides to give up all cases. Two preachers from the church and two radio anchors are also involved indirectly into the resolving process. They have different levels of devotion and expectation on those cases. They hope to help those people in trouble to build up new understanding on the front-line social workers as well as on themselves.

About a man from another world is alone in an environment that is livable, if not comfortable, but is ultimately a short film about diaspora, rootlessness, and the meaning of home. (NB: The voice-over is not in Esperanto, rather, and as noted in the closing credits, it is in the constructed language "Lingwa de planeta" -"LdP" or "Lidepla" for short-, perhaps further emphasizing rootlessness and the notions listed above.)

Life and death meet, only one can survive... Brother Pi is a notable thief, not only skillful, but also never leaves any clues after committing the crime, which gives the police a headache, Yong Liu is bent on successfully arresting Brother, in order to collect evidence.

A wedding musician fails to wed his own love: Little Trumpet is raring to marry his childhood sweetheart, but a series of setbacks has prevented them from getting their way. Criticism against social formalities becomes all the more forceful with the clever use of contrast and irony, not to mention the realist and comedic touch a la Zhu Shilin. Of special mention is the famous teahouse scene where dynamic, melodic camerawork creates a hilarity that continues to amaze to this day. A genuine masterpiece with every single detail, down to the minor props, forming an integral part of a whole. Today, young couples are struggling nonetheless to get a roof over their heads, a testimony to the fact that poverty still reigns beneath the facade of harmony and stability after all these years.

Production company Taoyuan chose for its inaugural film a comedy and Fong Yim-fun gets to take a break from playing long-suffering roles and showcase her talents in making us laugh! She plays the spritely titled character, brandishing a fresh image. The film is an adaptation of the literary classic Romance of the Western Chamber, in which the Prime Minister's daughter (Law Yim-hing), under siege from rebel soldiers, is rescued by a plan formulated by a poor scholar (Law Kim-long), with whom she is in love. But her mother (Poon Yat On) reneges afterwards on her promise to let the rescuer marry the daughter, and the clever Red Maid steps up as go-between, devising a series of sharp-witted tactics to help the lovers.

This timely documentary explores the singer's remarkable journey from Cantopop superstar to outspoken political activist, putting her life and career on the line in support of Hong Konger's struggle to maintain their political freedom.

Part literary documentary, part fantasy romance, LOVE & DEATH IN MONTMARTRE explores the life and work of lesbian Taiwanese writer Qiu Miaojin, whose suicide at age 26 devastated a generation of queer youth and whose ardent claim to her own right to love accelerated the movement for queer rights in Taiwan. Largely told through Qiu’s own words, we are shown a young woman’s longing not just for another’s love but for herself.
