Dumb Type: Memorandum

Combining elements of multimedia, dance and fragmented narrative, memorandum explores the hazy dimensions of recall that ground and disquietly erode our experience minute-by-minute. The set is simple - almost an abstraction. A bare stage is bisected by an impenetrable but translucent wall, a screen onto which will be projected a barrage of images. Amidst a cascade of white noise and REM-speed visual flashes, the performers break down the motions into displaced gestures in silhouette. Penetrating deeper beneath the surface of moment, dancers drift in a slow sensual subconscious slidestep through the "forest of memory" haunted by voices and desires.

Echoes from the Miike Mine

On March 30, 1997, the Miike Coal Mine, the largest mine in Japan, ceased operations. The burden of its history, however, is still being borne by many: a chronicle of prisoners used in the mine, forced labor, strikes, and coal dust explosions. This documentary is the first to directly confront the legacy of the Miike Mine, reviving through eyewitness testimonies a history of struggle lasting 150 years that modern Japan is trying to forget. It took seven years to complete, interviewing over 70 individuals, from the men and women who signed up to do this backbreaking work and lived in pride by the mountain, to the Koreans who were forcibly brought to Japan and made to work down the shaft. The director Hiroko Kumagai hopes that we look at Miike not just to explore the past, but also to think about the future: what it means to work and to live courageously.

Mystic Tube #1: Swinging, Escaping

An episode from the "Mystic Tube" series continues the same simple basic plot of “a pilgrim passes through a tunnel, playing music as he makes his way to his destination”. This work shares the same technique and form as AN ACID FIELD or WILD SHAMAN MAIDEN described above, but its theme is limited to “the changes in the echo of a sound as its mix in the dark as the harmonies of the drone made by a chanting pilgrim and its harmonic overtones evolve inside the 650meter tunnel with its reverberations that last more than 10 seconds.

Memory Loss

Yet Ono is stunned by the power of the memory enhancement device developed by Tatsuo, realizing that in terms of academic ability, he can no longer compete. He then harshly criticizes the device’s flaws, emotionally cornering Tatsuo. The original script, written in 1985, was intended as a follow-up to his 7th film “The Equation of the Fog”, but was never produced due to various circumstances. After 24 years, it was finally adapted into film with full cooperation from current members of the Koshigaya Campus Film Research Club.
