Through the Graves the Wind Is Blowing

If there is anyone who embodies the current state of life in Croatia, it is the police detective Ivan Peric. The son of a fisherman, he became a detective as a way of avoiding working in the only really prospering industry of present-day Croatia – tourism. Now his life is consumed by trying to solve a series of essentially unsolvable murders of tourists. Because the tourists are so widely despised, no one will help Ivan. Evidence disappears into the labyrinth of bureaucracy. He is humiliated in public and online. In the local press, his boss even labels him an “uhljeb”, the Croatian slur for a “lazy bureaucratic parasite”. All of this takes place in the city of Split, where the breakup of Yugoslavia has left its mark.

"Get the Jew": The Crown Heights Riot Revisited (WSJ Opinion Documentary)

"This 20 minute documentary sheds light on the worst antisemitic riot in American history, which occurred in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, in 1991. Triggered by a Hasidic man running a red light and accidentally hitting and killing a young black child, the riot led to attacks on Jews. Stores and police cars were burned and a Hasidic man was killed. David Dinkins, New York’s mayor at the time, allowed the riot to go on for three full days, while the media downplayed the antisemitism at the heart of the violence. The film’s interviews include Rev. Al Sharpton and then-Deputy Police Chief Ray Kelly as well as WSJ Opinion writer Elliot Kaufman. The current wave of antisemitism makes these events newly relevant and worthy of reconsideration" (The Wall Street Journal).

Salt & Pepper

BETH (Black) and JACK (White) are meeting to play together for the first time, but don't really know each other, although they work for the same company. They also have the same guitar instructor - Mark, but didn't know it until recently, when Jack needs a bass player for a song, and Mark recommends Beth. Beth steers the conversation toward interracial relationships because she wants to know what kind of guy she's playing with - she's had a bad experience with a white guy before. The film addresses aspects of interracial dynamics, including unconscious biases, as Beth and Jack navigate the conversation based on their past personal experiences, until they find common ground."

Ruínas de Navarone

"Ruinas de Navarone" explores the remaining life of the ruins of the unfinished construction of the War College on the shores of Lake Paranoá in Brasilia. Collapsed amphitheatres, flooded bunkers and labyrinths of open-air corridors are periodically ravaged by drought and covered over again by vegetation. In this setting, an artist sets up his easel. Children and adults have fun by the lake and stroll past ruined buildings. A painting session takes place among pigs, dogs and chickens. On the upper platform, military personnel supervise the area.
