The Stolen Sea

Umitori takes place in Shimokita Peninsula on the northern edge of the mainland, which was becoming a “nuclear energy peninsula”, undergoing tremendous development and serving as the home port for Mutsu, a nuclear-powered ship. Focusing on the fishermen and their stories, Tsuchimoto and his crew made their subject matter the “theft of the sea” perpetrated by giant business conglomerates. While the fishermen of Minamata were obvious victims of the mercury-poisoning tragedy, the fishermen in Shimokita were inadvertently becoming the permanent victims of another announced tragedy. Tsuchimoto interviews the fishermen, especially focusing on a stage play actor and his boat-owner family, establishing, as it became his practice, a complex reflection about the threat brought to small communities by the forces of “progress”.

Ecosystem 5 ~ A Tremulous Stone

The ecosystem series which started in 1981 counts 15 and is still growing, becoming Koike's lifework. Through the series, Koike has shot a huge amount – thousands – of still photos of objective motifs, from ocean creatures, microbes, and granite to artificial material such as fishing nets. Those photos are developed with a specialized method then reshot with movie film. The style has been thoroughly continued. The images that are created as a result tower before our eyes as an overwhelming visual experience. Each motif has been repeatedly decomposed and reconstructed of its "attribution" and "meaning", causing a shocking Gestalt breakdown for the audience.

Back Head

Tsujiko is a college student who suddenly cuts her hair short like a man. Her ordinary daily life is captured with an ultra-long camera that is almost always left unmoved. Episodes with her friends from her high school days are cut back and forth in black and white, and the past and present are told in an unhurried manner. However, the past soon becomes a duplicate of the present, and every day turns into a daringly extraordinary one. Inspired by a short film of the same title by Fumiko Takano.

Bass, Amaryllis

Bass Amarillo was looking for "his own sound". He sings he shouts, he thumps. But his sound was hard to find. "This is not the sound I want to hear! The journey to find the sound continues sadly. The sounds and images that are repeated over and over again eventually reach the audience's antennae in the form of pop music. The film's main point is to show the video generation's visual play on film. This is the real image of young people who are now trying to run at the cutting edge.

GAMUZE 3

We gathered at the Shinjuku Sports Center, located between Shinjuku and Takadanobaba. It was just before the “Great Funeral Reception” of the Emperor Showa after his death, and the police were on high alert. Of the 12 participants, 6 were former members of the video street gang. Of the 12 participants, six were former members of the video street gang, and another six were from Hokkaido, so it was an uneven training session. I was also very hungover and spent most of the morning in the bathroom throwing up all over the place, which was a big turn-off for me.

Guiding Star

In April 1985, I started to make a film with my friend Kamioka as the main character. But even after three months, the whole film was still unknown. I started to work alone with the camera. One day, the rabbit he keeps at home gives birth to a stillborn baby. As he buries her under a tree in the garden, it made me think of his father, who died the year before. He is no longer with us, but only the gaze he left behind. And so I set off on a journey. In a town in the Hokuriku region, he met a woman who once appeared in one of his films. When I dozed off on the train to Tokyo, she appeared to me in a dream and tells me that I will soon find the exit. Back in Tokyo, I told Kamioka that I'm going to start filming again. I came back into the room, turned on the microphone and pressed the flame against the lens.

Basara no Hana (Flowers of Extravagance)

In April 1985 Kusama staged a performance in the cherry tree grove at Kuhonbutsu Jōshin-ji, a Buddhist temple in Tokyo. Commissioned by a professor at Tokyo University, the performance was titled Basara no Hana (Flowers of Extravagance) in reference to the extravagance of the fourteenth-century lord Dōyo Sasaki. He was said to have held a lavish celebration of cherry blossoms near Kyoto that lasted twenty days. For the performance, Kusama encircled the flowering trees with red and white streamers, connecting them in a ‘net’.

New Maps of the City Part One: Notes for Films

Director Roger Garcia drew inspiration from Close to Our Hearts, a script he wrote after returning to Hong Kong from the United Kingdom in 1977. Although the project never materialised because of a lack of funding and resources, Garcia adapted its elements—character lines, location shots, references to other films, portraits of a harpist—for this essay film, which traces a disintegrating relationship between a Chinese musician and his English wife, a photographer. Ruminating on the liminal space between text and image, Garcia seeks new ways of looking at a ceaselessly evolving city.

ERYTHROPOIEISIS AND ERYTHROPOIETIN

The red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout the body have a lifespan of 120 days. The living body continuously produces blood to ensure a plentiful supply of red blood cells. This film accurately records the conversion of stem cells into red blood cells. Conditions such as encounters with various other cells and contact with signals sent by other cells are important for the growth of blood cells, and the erythropoietin is one of these important signals. This signal stimulates the stromal cells to produce the necessary number of red blood cells which are continuously sent into the bloodstream.
