Jihad

The most dangerous madmen are those created by religion, and people whose aim is to disrupt the society always know how to make good use of them on occasion. With various outfits of terrorism spreading its tentacles across the world this three centuries old quote of Denis Diderot seems to be apt and as contemporary as it can be. With vulnerable youths falling for the stories of getting an opportunity to work for Allah and empowered with thoughts that your hands will kill the innocent but Allah will forgive all has given these youths the notion that all is fair on the course of Jihad. In the history of mankind, fanaticism has caused more harm than any vice. Despite a space of several years the wounds inflicted by the Indian army in Kashmir were still fresh in Altaaf's mind when he joined the terrorist outfit with the pious thoughts of wiping away the enemies of Islam. Little did he know that he had in turn, gullibly fallen into the trap of people with vested interest and crooked ideas.

The Unseen Sequence

In Malavika Sarukkai - an artist rooted in tradition but with a uniquely contemporary sensibility - one of India's most profound classical arts, Bharatanatyam, is being re-interpreted, renewed, invigorated. The film is not simply about Malavika Sarukkai; it deliberates the valuable connections and departures that the artist makes from a hallowed and, often, unforgiving tradition. Today, even as she impresses her footprint on the world stage as a celebrated Bharatanatyam dancer, Malavika finds herself making increasingly personal choices about how she wishes to lead that life. It is this co-existence of consummate expression with a deeper, spiritual quest that makes her dance so exciting.

Wind Seed

Gaalibeeja is a debut film made by an artist and is an homage to the genre of the Road Movie and seminal filmmakers like Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch and Abbas Kiarostami. It opens with Prakash, a road engineer, leaving for a site visit to an unnamed village. On the way he gives a lift to Jaffer, someone who previously sold pirated dvds, and receives a set of road movies from him. The sequences in the films and the people that Prakash meets in life begin to resonate with each other. Jaffer’s pronouncement that Prakash’s life could be a film comes back to him as he witnesses each person starring in their own road movie. The road carries us, connects us, it equally disrupts lives. The film explores this ambivalence and the different temporalities people inhabit.

I am Your Poet

This documentary was to be on a revolutionary poet and his poetry. It became a story of a person who lives a poem. And as we journey through the poetry and the poet, we end up with a mirror. In the mirror, a roughly-hew life, small, innocent-a dream-like existence, in the scrub forest, among the silent ruins, the old streets in the middle of the metropolis. The poetry slowly shows us the way, and the way slowly becomes poetry. The Protagonist has never written poetry, he speaks out poetry. He is poet of our unknown, unorganized, underground nation. He is the poet of those whose constituency is always bearing the cost of empire-builders.

Apna Hath Jagannath

Quintessentially villainous 'Teja' has kept children to beg and earn money for him. Among these little children are five poverty stricken friends who otherwise have no one to look after them. Unlike Teja's other lot, Vijay (hero's name) and his friends believe in hard work and not beggary. While cleaning cars at a traffic signal Vijay comes across a hard-hearted incident. The incident is deeply rooted in Vijay's heart who grows up to be an auto-driver as the plot takes a 15 years leap. With the 5 friends working independently now, the title 'Apna Hath Jagannath', is truly justified.

Welcome Valentine

The film explores the ideas of love, politics and Hindu religion in contemporary Ahmedabad, Gujarat through a priest who has been marrying off eloping couples in a Hanuman Temple. Not just eloping couples but also people from the LGBT community. Hirabhai Juguji (the priest) approaches love, marriage, politics and religion not just with extreme simplicity, but also extreme depth. His beliefs are very unusual compared to the orthodox and conservative beliefs priests are known to have in India and one is left wondering about one’s own convictions. It is at his temple that the very complex ideas of love, religion and politics criss cross and contrast and turn into something wonderful.
