Era Roma

Era Roma is about a magic moment in the city’s history – from 1963, with the founding of Gruppo ’63, and 1979, when the Poets’ Festival was held at Castelporziano – when the Italian capital exerted a magnetic pull on artists who were independent, underground, and freewheeling. It would not come around again. They were artists who sought each other out and used politics to engage with society and change lives, in a season that started with the post-war economic boom and ended in a reaction against the upheaval of the 1968 protests. Stock footage, film clips, and interviews with the leading figures of the day, all collected over the years, make Era Roma the distillation of an amazing, turbulent era when the arts blurred the borders with real life and tried to turn reality into a work of art.

Opera di Roma: Turandot

Opera in three acts (1926) New Production! Celebrated contemporary artist Ai Weiwei makes his operatic debut with a new reading of Puccini’s fairy tale of misdirected love, exile and rule by decree. It’s a fitting project for Weiwei, famous for geopolitical installations, sculptures and photography that question authority and champion human rights and expression. From the ominous opening five notes, the score plunges audiences into an uncertain, violent world, seeped in bloodshed and despotism, where the cruel, seductive princess, Turandot (Ukrainian soprano Oksana Dyka), is pursued by a brave suitor (American tenor Michael Fabiano, in a role debut). This staging is performed without the ending added by Puccini's contemporary, Franco Alfano. The brilliant Oksana Lyniv conducts.

If I Were a Man

Trapped in a transparent cage, four characters perform their empty, ritualistic actions, staging an endless hunt, synonymous with feelings that are now dead. Michele, the puppet son of a declining nobility, manipulates and commands his fictitious bourgeois friends, Ettore and Leo, to avenge the love of Mariagrazia, which has now faded away. In this eternal hunt, each character pursues their own authentic existence, which eludes them with terrifying ease. Thus, their entire lives become empty, similar to that of objects. Only a cruel glimmer of honesty can shake the golden cage, whose walls have been too thick to be demolished until now.

Detto per Detto

Anthropologist Ernesto De Martino in “Il Mondo Magico” traces an analysis of what he referred to as "subaltern popular world", that is, those social realities that were marked by the strong presence of a whole series of practical and pragmatic methods, handed down from generation to generation (from word of mouth to actual rituals), which were performed by people so that it would be easier to deal with everything that presented itself as uncontrollable and unknown, identified as “the loss of being-there”.
