Kanan Gill : What Is This? (also Original)

I recorded this video a week after filming the special, just because it was the last show of the tour. It's quite different in feeling and form compared to the version of the special (confusingly listed as 'What is This? - Original' on this channel). While filming a special I focus on precision and performance, that is doing the show exactly as written and capturing the show as I first conceived it. Live shows on the other hand are also informed by their context —where is this, what time is it, how are you feeling, how am I feeling, is the room too cold, was traffic awful, did someone leave to go to the loo?, etc. This show captures a little more of the regular live experience of performing a stand up show. It's looser, and more tied to the show that day instead of the special-special which aims to capture the show out of time. I hope this isn't confusing. I'm quite confused writing it.

'Na Aavadti Goshta' centers on a traditional Maharashtrian household upended when one of two sisters comes out as queer. As her unexpected confession sends ripple effects through the traditional family structure, the household must confront their long-held taboos and biases. The narrative chronicles the sisters' changing dynamic alongside their parents' journey from initial resistance to compassionate understanding. Instead of focusing on tragic themes or external violence, the plot uses a lighthearted, slice-of-life comedy approach to showcase how love and empathy can bridge generational divides. Ultimately, it emphasizes the vital role familial support plays in the lives of LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Upon Starvation

Vivek, a 30-something pickpocket in Pune, uses seduction as a distraction, pressing against men on crowded buses to steal and satisfy his desires. Detached, he exploits others’ hunger while suppressing his own. Meeting Kartik, a soft-spoken student seeking genuine intimacy, disrupts Vivek’s control. What begins as a hunt unravels into vulnerability, as Kartik’s tenderness challenges Vivek’s transactional world. The film blends the raw eroticism of Vivek’s encounters with the quiet, messy intimacy Kartik offers. As Vivek grapples with feelings he has long suppressed, the line between hunter and hunted blurs, leaving him to confront the cost of his transactional life.
