S.O.S. Amazonas: Apokalypse im Regenwald

Large uncontrolled fires and flames have severely damaged the Amazon rainforests of Brazil in the summer of 2019 and destroyed countless trees. The main cause of the fires seems to be the man-made slash-and-burn. The drought, which has lasted for months, favors the situation. Likewise, the radical policy of the new Brazilian government under right-wing populist President Jair Bolsonaro contributes to the destruction of the Amazon jungles. When the green lung of the earth burns, not only experts and international politicians are terrified. Protecting the world's unique ecosystem is of vital importance to all people of the world. The film examines the current environmental and humanitarian catastrophe in the Amazon region and gives voice to environmental activists as well as relativizing proponents of the fires.

Looking for Cesária Évora

On the occasion of the famous carnival of Mindelno, on the island of São Vicente where Cesaria Évora was born, this documentary offers a musical journey to discover "Sodade" and its legacy. Cesaria Évora, who died in 2011 after a twenty-year career, has allowed Cape Verde to shine throughout the world. The small archipelago, which was for several centuries an important hub of the slave trade has promoted since then an important ethnic mix, which has played an important role in the evolution of local music.

Thüringen, Deine Sprache

Are dialects and regional languages still spoken in Thuringia, and what do they sound like? The West Thuringian dialect spoken in the Wartburgkreis district, around Eisenach and Bad Salzungen, can sound quite distinctive, as the example from Ruhla shows. Near Mühlhausen, there is the Vogteier Platt dialect, and in the Rudolstadt and Saalfeld area, the Ilmthuringian dialect transitions into the Southeast Thuringian dialect. Around Meiningen and in the Sonneberg area, the dialect sounds Franconian. And the Altenburg dialect belongs to the East Thuringian dialect...

It's a Long Way From Amphioxus

Kamal Aljafari’s short film once again collapses time, questioning the meaning of life in a system in which humanity is reduced to a number and the value of one’s future is measured by applications within grey hallways. Step into this black hole, where bones and flesh have become numbers in a queuing system. This surreal film observes the origins of our being versus the future of how we are defined. What have we become from our point of origin until today’s chaos of bureaucratic mazes? It’s a long way from Amphioxus, we all came from there.

Wie klingt der Urknall – Botschaften vom Anfang des Universums

In September 2015, the world of science experienced a sensation: researchers in the USA succeeded in proving the existence of gravitational waves for the first time in the history of physics. A milestone. This proof opens up a completely new perspective on our universe - perhaps even on the birth of the cosmos itself, nothing less than the Big Bang. Gravitational waves are created when something gigantic happens in the universe: a stellar explosion, the merging of neutron stars or black holes.

Bellini: I Puritani

A passionate young couple finds itself caught up in a conflict between opposing political factions. Entangled as they are in a web of political intrigue, deception and madness, will the power of their love prevail? Set in England during the Civil War, Bellini’s last opera I puritani opposes Royalist cavaliers and rebellious Puritans. Its sweeping historical drama and romantic intrigues drew rapturous music of melancholy intensity from the composer. For the first time, this production includes the entire score written for the work’s Paris premiere.

The Oder-Delta - A Wilderness without Borders

A boundless wilderness, a mere flapping of wings away from the white sandy beaches of the famous Baltic bathing resorts on Usedom and Wollin. In this dream-like aquatic world between Germany and Poland, sea eagles breed so close to one another that one could be excused for considering it a colony. The first wolf pack in Mecklenburg Western Pomerania settled here years ago in the Oder Delta. Huge herds of wild horses cross the vast plains, while bison roam the forests of the Polish side. This film tells the dramatic story of a lonely bison bull that found its way across the border into Germany and reveals intimate insights into the domestic life of the beaver. The absolute highlight has to be the 200 sea eagles that came to the Anklamer Stadtbruch during the summer. A natural spectacle that one can only experience in the Oder-Delta.

Krenek: Karl V

Ernst Krenek's theatrical piece Karl V. consisting completely of twelve-tone series should have premiered at the Vienna State Opera. The political situation in the Vienna of 1933 and the fact that Krenek was despised by the Nazis because of this Jazz opera Jonny spielt auf, prevented the première. It only took place five years later in Prague, however Krenek had already emigrated to the USA. Karl V was the last emperor to hold to the idea of a Christian empire in which the sun never set, although its downfall was always inevitable, for numerous reasons. For the second production of Karl V. in the Nationaltheater, Carlus Padrissa in particular seeks out political power systems that are highly topical, and so very precisely analyses the treatment in the theatrical piece. At the core of the intellectually and linguistically highly qualified libretto, written by the composer himself, Karl V. reflects on his life and makes his confession to a young monk below Titian's La Gloria.

Alte Bande

Boxer is the king of the prison. Nothing happens without him in "his" prison, and if he has to, he will even knock out a much younger inmate - at over 80 years of age, mind you. However, his advanced age is increasingly taking its toll, which has not gone unnoticed by the prison doctor. Boxer is to be transferred to a prison especially for senior citizens - the idea alone makes the sprightly prison veteran shudder. But then his buddy Henne tells him that he has been looking for Boxer's great love Kathrin, and what's more: he has learned that Kathrin has a daughter - and she looks remarkably like Boxer...

A New Environment Heinrich Klotz on Architecture and New Media

The old world is gone. Our landscape bears scars. Entire cities have been levelled. Is it possible to regenerate the city without covering over the warnings of war’s aggressions? Or can these ruins provide a unique chance to reinvent the city thoroughly? The art historian Heinrich Klotz took precisely these questions, concerning the reconstruction of Germany’s historical districts after World War II, as the departure point of his practice.

The Symphony of Uncertainty

This is a far-reaching interrogation of something that’s usually regarded as the undoubted precondition of life (generally) and filmmaking (specifically): an objective, at best yet interpretable reality. Starting with Gerhard Mack, retired professor of theoretical elementary particle physics at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, Claudia Lehmann and Konrad Hempel set out on a filmic expedition that aims for the universal and at the same time delves into the molecular (and smaller) realm, asking for the meaning of every kind of life in our complex world.

Helmut Berger, My Mother and Me

My mother googles the film hero of her youth: Helmut Berger. She is shocked: only an addicted shadow of the former icon seems to be left. She decides to halt the obvious catastrophic decline of the once “most handsome man in the world”. As a consequence, this one-time god of the screen is suddenly sitting on my mother’s sofa in Nordsehl in Lower Saxony. And he stays put - for several months. While he trustingly rolls out his whole life before us, the dividing lines between film team, world star and family intermingle. This is a film about ageing, rising and falling - and about the fact that it is sometimes possible to regain an element of dignity in life.

Germany's Wild Wolves - As They Really Are

Wolves – some see in them predatory beasts, others romanticize them as mythical creatures. But does their fabled competitive hierarchy also exist in the wild? Over a period of three years, our filmmaker obtained unique footage of a family of wild wolves as has never been seen before in Europe. This is the first documentary about wild wolves in Germany shot exclusively in the wild; it shows how similar the social structures of humans and wolves are and dispels myths about a fascinating wild animal.
