Thank You

In Cambodia, where the ancient city of Angkor once flourished, a temple sits on a man-made island in the middle of a reservoir. In Awkun (meaning “thank you” in Khmer), Cambodian American director praCh Ly shares a day in the life of the surrounding community, filmed on-site in West Baray and at the island-temple West Mebon. A fisherman navigates to the reservoir in his boat before dawn. A merchant woman barbecues skewered fish from the same waters. A group of young monks accepts offerings, eats, prays, swims, and takes a boat out to the temple. Through such everyday moments, Awkun draws attention to the often-overlooked relationships that bridge sacred and urban spaces, from past to present. This film was commissioned specially for our exhibition Vishnu’s Cosmic Ocean.

Confession

Confession is a machinima by Gianni Romeo that grew out of the director’s found-footage documentary work inspired by Marquis De Sade’s The 120 Days of Sodom, specifically The Simple Passions, in which amateur porn videos sourced online are used to test the persistence of libertinage in contemporary culture. The project’s point of departure is an internet video of a young woman secretly recording her confession to a priest; initially conceived as a prologue for a new instalment, it ultimately became a standalone short once its self-contained intensity became clear. Structurally, the film draws on A.K.A. Serial Killer (1969/1975) by Masao Adachi, replacing the subject with environments: Romeo films the three churches of Los Santos inside Grand Theft Auto V, discarding the original image but retaining its audio, and setting up a deliberate tension between virtual architecture and intimate testimony.

She’s Real Slow With It. I’m Cold and I’m Tired. In the Process, I’ll Rethink My Life. I’ll Cry for the Future.

A late night look into a window, one where you see disco lights down allies. I can sense a fog lifting. It can't come fast enough. When will it be my time, or has my time already gone unnoticed ? Carry me home, but you can't and you won't. I'm scared of two islands. I know we have places to be. Smiles to share. Looking back in shame at some (3) scribbles from my heart. I can't even laugh at them. What began as dreams built on toy blocks and a few glances. Carry on. My fingers fit into the grooves of my face. Push it around and play with it like putty. Massage it as I will. Tear apart it's pain 'til it droops and goes numb. Far away from here I'll find you. Glistening as to ward off my fears. My falling face can piece itself together. Do not judge me then. Do not judge me now. Love me as friend.
