Rue du retrait

Rue du retrait is a film which is quite unique to René Féret for various reasons.Firstly,it is a film which he shot in his own area, near his own house.Rue de retrait is the name of the street in 20th arrondissement in Paris where Mr.Féret stays. So in a way the location afforded a lot of familiarity in terms of location to the cinéaste. Secondly, the making of this film will always remain a miracle of sorts for René Féret as no big production house was willing to finance such a brave, absolutely uncommon film in France. So this film was finally made due to René Féret's personal intervention and highly individual efforts. Its visual style was applauded by a great French filmmaker named Bertrand Tavernier who has long been one of René Féret's admirers.

Apprendre à tuer

Filmed in the south of France during the summers of 2006 and 2007, this short film is enough to bear witness to a horrific spectacle witnessed by children of all ages in the arenas. Young teenagers cut their teeth on young bulls and are introduced to the practice of bullfighting in French bullfighting schools, most of which are subsidized by public funds. Beyond the atrocity of bullfighting, the film powerfully demonstrates the need to ban minors from the arenas, as is the case in Catalonia.

The low reserve price surprises them and they go round to have a look. Finding the door open, Malo picks up a letter from a little girl to her father saying she misses him - moved by the resonance with his own daughter, Malo accidentally takes the note with him when they leave in a hurry. He learns that she really doesn't want to sell the house, which is all that remains of her childhood. The relationship between them develops, and emotions run high at the auction. Ultimately the film explores whether Malo can give both or either Cloé and his daughter what they want/need,

This documentary, featuring clips from a remarkable range of films, celebrates the early years of British filmmaking and spans from such pioneers as George Albert Smith and Cecil Hepworth to such later figures as Anthony Asquith, Maurice Elvey and, of course, Alfred Hitchcock.
