Frontier

With no plot or characters, this experimental film captures the landscape of a housing project, as well as the varied possibilities arising from its visual impact on the landscape. The reason why I chose a housing project as my subject is because I used to live in one and, even now, am strangely drawn to them. I also suspect that regardless of one’s nationality, the housing project is an archetypal environment universally recognizable to those of my generation. Without using spoken words, this film is a dedication to the housing project and those people of my generation all over the world.

Pellet

It is an unexpected, and therefore unshakable, the perfect love relationship between a human and an animal. That is the core of the film's persuasiveness, and everyone who watches it will agree. In just one scene, you are overwhelmed by the eroticism that his relationship with the owl radiates. Death is brought into focus in the scene where Pellet explains the relationship, but the clean images and restrained narration, which make even this seem effortless, accentuate the eroticism of the relationship. A semi-documentary created by the director's owl, which she has kept for 14 years.

Katsura Funakoshi: Whispering Gaze

Katsura Funakoshi: Whispering Gaze observes the visionary sculptor Katsura Funakoshi as he quietly breathes life into camphor wood. Take a look as he works in his atelier, preps for exhibitions, and speaks at lectures. The simple, warm and gentle figures carved out by Funakoshi can be attributed to the harmony of precise calculations and accidental occurrences. His human-like sculptures draw in beholders with their distant marble gaze as if pondering philosophical thoughts and projecting subtle yet bold emotions.

Ms. Ryan, an Ama Diver

This documentary highlights three years in the life of Ms. RYAN Eehon. She came to Japan after the Korean War from Cheju Island, South Korea and now lives alone in Osaka. She was born in 1916 and is 87 years old. We started this project when we came across an old film from 38 years ago, made by Mr. SHIN Gis, a researcher of Japanese-Korean history. The film describes the life of an ama diver and how she sent her children to North Korea with the repatriation program. Combining the old footage with present day footage, this film was finally completed successfully with the help of a Japanese and Korean camera crew and a family member of Ms. Ryan. The film describes the history of a Korean woman in Japan, her visit to homeland Cheju Island after a 53-year absence and her final visit to North Korea in 2003. It deals with the tragedy brought on by the conflict between the two nations and the significance of the family bond.
