Inventory

135.072 frames form the audiovisual inventory of a life edited by the images. This documentary made of archival material explores what lies at the edges of the frames, what rests in the middle of the cuts, what the out of focus and the low definition hide, what stereotypes and codes veils. They are images produced over the last ten years by me and other filmmakers to superficially portrait the forced disappearance of Irina and the political activism of her mother, Blanca Díaz. I wanted to make this inventory, to classify these images, to re-edit them, in order to unveil what they are hiding, to dismantle their regime and to understand how they have crossed Blanca’s life; how to build a life that has been edited by the images.

In Aiye's Garden: Propagation And Processing of Enset in the Gamo Highlands

Enset, which is related to the banana plant, is very drought resistant and a good source of carbohydrates (in the stem and underground bulb). Enset has been farmed from time immemorial in the Gamo Highlands of southern Ethiopia, where women are the main cultivators. The film focuses on Aiye, the filmmaker's grandmother, who shares her knowledge about the enset plant, and shows how it is possible to produce good organic food by using simple farming tools and natural fertilizers. We see how she and a young kinswoman cultivate (using animal dung and organic waste to fertilize the plants), propagate (generating suckers from the corm), harvest (digging up the plant) and process (scraping and fermentating) the enset, and finally produce a variety of nutritious dishes.

Rajaa, That Means Hope

Men who have come to France, separated from their children who stayed in their country, are living in a center for immigrant workers. A musician invites them to sing lullabies. Within the intimate setting of these workshops, they reconnect with buried emotions and memories. These lullabies resonate with their testimony on the complexity of paternity from a great distance and life between two countries. From far away, the voice of a child tells us the father's lack and the wound of separation.

Left, Right & Centre

Left, Right and Centre shows the interior of the House of Commons during the 2017 election campaign. Newspapers are piled on the benches and blow around the chamber when they are caught in an unexpected breeze. Headlines charting polarised opinions across the political spectrum are seen clashing and scattering amid the general mess and chaos. The work was filmed in darkness at night and in daylight the following day, using two cameras, a drone and a wind machine. One camera acts as passive observer and the other (on the drone) acts as an agitator that disrupts the familiar space.
