Les Chatons

It is, firstofall, the romantic or the pagan will of vagabonding, mixed with the desire to make a film that appears as a diary, which formed the basis of the project Les Chatons . It is, therefore , an epic journey on a known , but nonetheless mysterious trail in search of a clairvoyant but invisible mollusk. It is about an ancient Greek God, as well as an attempt at the metamorphosis, and taming of seagulls, and finally, the film concludes with a meeting a piece of furniture with drawers.

The Loom

A place of webs and shadows, where time slows and a strange music signals enchantment. The Loom features an eerie soundtrack by composer Abi Fry, produced by recording the otherworldly sounds issuing from an Aeolian harp. The Aeolian harp, an instrument played solely by the wind, was a prime symbol of the Romantic era. It was thought to have been originally invented by Athanasius Kircher (1601-1680) who was also lowered into the crater of Vesuvius, tried to construct a world language, and studied Egyptian hieroglyphics. The Aeolian harp that features in The Loom was made especially for the film by instrument maker James Parry. Toby Tatum’s film “The Loom is a disturbing work that will patiently involve the spectator in its web” Curtas Vila Do Conde, 2019 festival catalogue.

Giant!

Thomas is French and has lived in New York for the last 6 years. He feels homesick and decides to return to France with two American friends, Andrée and Adel. He helps them discover his native region, the North of France and Douai, the city where he grew up. There, the celebration of "Gayant" ("Giant" in the regional dialect) takes place. During three days of festivities, a family of giant puppets made of wicker parades in the streets of the city, inspiring the awe of spectators. Thomas and his friends are astonished by the parade, the enthusiasm of the crowd but also by the commitment of the "porteurs", the men who lift the giants. Our friends encounter one surprise after another and meet local figures who share the love of the region, its dialect and culinary recipe. They experience the excitement of parading with those puppets and feel renewed with the assurance that humanity is capable of ingenuity based on common cause and shared values.
