Luminous Variations in the City Skies

At Bologna’s Specola Tower, 1932–1957, an optical technology was invented which would revolutionize astronomy. The tower’s four floors were perforated and a series of hexagonal mirrors was installed at its base, creating a giant telescope of 2×24 meters. A mobile camera was set at right angles to the mirrors and thousands of glass plates where exposed which offered a systematic overview of the city’s zenithal sky. Thirty years of research were necessary for the astronomer Guido Horn D’Arturo to invent the specchio a tasselli—also called multimirror or segmented mirror—an archetype of today’s most advanced telescopes. Horn D’Arturo’s photographic plates are now also full of spots and traces of deteriorated emulsions. This film is composed of scans and blow-ups of these plates.

La Belle Hélène

La belle Hélène is the work that confirmed Offenbach's international reputation. The libretto caricatures the conventions of Greek mythology to poke fun at contemporary society, and the melodies, once heard, never leave you. The erotic and political scandal surrounding the creation of this work ensured its immediate and enduring success. We are carried away by music that is always new and inventive, sprinkled with nods to other works: the dream duet between Helen and Paris, the patriotic trio mimicking Rossini's William Tell, the ensemble of "the man with the apple" and the waltz of the "vile seducer"... Not to mention the exquisite humor of the language, whose inventions, such as "plis de vaillance" (folds of valor) and "poux de la reine" (queen's lice), have entered the lexical fund. In this celebration of Offenbach, we constantly swing between laughter and beauty, indulging in the pleasure of all the senses...

A Wild Dedication

As if engaging in an archaeological task, A Wild Dedication presents different objects found in the Woman Welfare Agency’s headquarters in San Fernando de Henares, which was operational from 1944 to 1985. Can a space built for female sexual repression give out traces of rebellion forms? Which affective memory do these ‘souvenirs’ trigger and how can they be integrated in the historic account on the Franco regime, the Spanish Transition and the first years of democracy?

Copia De La Copia (De La Copia)

The film contains quotes from more than 20 films made in Poland in 1952–1989, along with samples from film soundtracks, music tracks, and elsewhere (vintage gay porn movies, music and home video films, social media clips). Completed in Vienna during a covid-19 semi-lockdown, the film conjures my teenage affects and tells them as a blurry and fragmented autobiographical story, simultaneously reacting to the current socio-political situation in Poland, with its “LGBT free zones”, violation of democracy, police brutality, and state censorship.

Air to Breathe

Air To Breathe is a film about a group of militant workers inside the Opel car plant in Bochum, Germany. The group was founded in 1972, initially with the help of revolutionaries from the 1968 movement. For over 40 years, the group fought for better working conditions inside the plant. Over time, their incessant rank-and-file activism made the workers in Bochum the most radical in the entire German metal sector: Opel Bochum saw several wildcat strikes, and a persistent and successful fight for the reduction of daily working time. The group even attempted to build up direct links between different workforces of General Motors in Europe to fight back against the raise to the bottom of wages and working conditions in a situation of worldwide competition for investments amongst GM plants. Their activities culminated in a six days wildcat strike in 2004.

Asmrrrr Molesto

ASMR: Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. A phenomenon that gained popularity starting in 2010 on video-streaming platforms, followed by scientific and psychological research into its potential to alleviate physical and mental conditions, including stress, anxiety, and insomnia. Through a reinterpretation of the Theater of the Absurd, the work parodies both addiction to web TV series and ASMR, symptoms of an individualistic society that sublimates its need for empathy into video content aimed at strangers.
