A working iteration of the project "business as usual : hostile environment". Originally co-commissioned with Glasgow Sculpture Studios as part of Event Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters, the project was conceived to explore Glasgow’s Forth and Clyde Canal as both a literal and poetic route through which to reflect on the role of waterways in the voluntary and involuntary movement of people. Reworking aspects of the new film at speed and in light of the Covid-19 outbreak, Whittle powerfully incorporates archival footage relating to the UK’s Windrush scandal as well as material highlighting the role of immigrants in the NHS as they tackle the virus, foregrounding how political and ecological climates intersect and shape one another.

It was the night between December 15 and 16, 1969, when railwayman, anarchist and partisan Giuseppe Pinelli, known as “Pino,” died at the age of 41 after falling from a window of the Milan police headquarters, where he was being held for investigation after a bomb exploded at the Banca Nazionale dell’Agricoltura in Milan: now the documentary goes in search of the man, the husband and the father, with his ideas, his passions, his affections--starting from that fateful 1969 and arriving at 2009, when President Giorgio Napolitano called him “the 18th victim of the Piazza Fontana massacre.”

The narrator in the moving image work "GALAXY" is technology itself. "GALAXY" tells the story of the brief encounter of the two characters Touch and Long Swipe. The story is generated by an algorithm and offers an interpretation of an encounter of love and disappointment. Small deviations in the language and the narrative logic reveal our social imprint of how stories are expected to be told and how technology is programmed to follow these perceptions. The mise-en-scéne is a computer-generated galaxy of objects and images reminiscent of the organic, but dismembered and fragmented, reflecting on the possibility of creating new worlds and stories in digital space by following a subjective system of ordering.

"Night Song" is a wall-based installation that includes a video collage incorporating stop motion animation and hand painted video stills. It explores ideas behind the theme of insomnia. Filmed after dark, the multiple layering of images and sound draws the viewer into the unsettling emotional world of the insomniac. The soundtrack is made from recordings of a beautiful dawn chorus that has been slowed down and reversed to create a wakeful nightmarish lullaby. The hand painted video stills create a further dimension, taking the painterly process in the film making off the screen, back on to paper and reworked using oil paint.

Diamond Frances’s daughter has a rare chromosomal deletion. She is without speech, is on the autistic spectrum and has severe learning disability. These aspects of her life clearly have a big influence on Frances’s life, which is why her artistic practise often deals with issues about her daughter. The video is called "Deletion," and is about the fact that some of her daughter’s chromosomes have gone missing when she was created, and the impact this has on her life.

Five Days To Say Goodbye is based on final conversations that a grieving mother has with her son before she says goodbye to him for the very last time. It is written and acted by Beverley Bishop, who tragically lost her son to suicide in October 2018. This is a story of a mother’s love and grief that is thought provoking, poignant and honest.

Fatou, a 23-year-old Italian girl of Senegalese origin, lives in a Roman suburb with her mother. Though her mother would like Fatou to be educated according to the strict rules of her own native culture, Fatou, on the other hand, is on a quest for her own identity—one that joins Italian culture with being a Muslim woman of color. The stigma and isolation of her immigrant background seem insurmountable. The only friends she can find are also children of immigrants. But her true passion and defense against the prejudice around her is her singing. Music is one thing that will never betray her.

Sacred Hunger emerged as a challenge to link isolation, fear of contagion, military force and extreme vigilance.
