Alsace, dans la tourmente de l'Histoire

Half-timbered houses, storks, wine, sauerkraut, traditional headdresses, the Alsatian accent: these images and clichés of Alsace occupy the imagination of almost all French people. Few other regions can boast such a charming and popular heritage. But behind this apparent prosperity and love of a job well done lies a more painful history. Ravaged by three wars in less than a century, Alsace saw its inhabitants forced to change nationality four times during a single lifetime. A tormented, extraordinary destiny, little known to the rest of the country.

The Fourth Generation

Professional provocateur and artist Maven Shegula has returned to Berlin after a hiatus in Zürich. She’s back to celebrate her 50th birthday, and to appear on a popular German talk show. As she wanders the streets of Berlin with her girlfriend and friend, it becomes apparent that being an artist in this city is no longer acceptable. The humming nightlife has disappeared, and the vibrant creative community pushed to the margins of society. The film is alive with tension, both sexual and otherwise. As Maven’s story unfolds on live television, we learn about her son, her politics, her heritage, and her alter-ego Rosa who champions radical self-expression and feminism. The interview is dispersed with beautiful volcanic eruptions from Maven that act as both a denunciation of the city’s leadership and a love letter to Berlin.

The Endless Road

An ancient territorial axis along which a part of the city has been structured. By virtue of its rank, this road will continue to play an ordering role within the city, i.e. the role of a modern armour, becoming the testimony of large complexes and spaces that, since the mid-19th century, have articulated the expanding city and given shape to its new needs: a psychiatric hospital, a cemetery, factories, a shopping centre, an amusement park. These places reject the logic of urban homogeneity, imposing themselves as coherent, autonomous realities. Some authors call these (separate and differently regulated) places ‘heterotopies’. In these places, the spatial dissolution that characterizes contemporary cities is enormously amplified. Boundaries, which are in themselves uncertain, definitively fade, whereby any act of delimitation or attribution of relevance becomes utterly impossibl

Oceans Are the Real Continents

Alex and Edith, a young couple in their 30s, live their relationship made up of small gestures and everyday life among the ruins of Cuban buildings. Milagros, an elderly woman now retired, tries to survive by selling peanuts and spends her days listening to the radio and reading old letters. Frank and Alain, two nine-year-old friends, go to school and dream of emigrating together to the United States to become Major League Baseball players. Against the backdrop of San Antonio De Los Baños, a town in inland Cuba where time seems to stand still, these three narratives and their respective worlds unfold. Over this mosaic of contemporaneity, however, brought to life through the characters' memories, hovers the specter of separation, the true great scourge of Cuban society.

Strade perdute - Filmmaker 23

For Filmmaker Film Festival (2023), Fulvio Baglivi and Cristina Piccino asked some filmmakers (R. Beckermann, J. Bressane, D’Anolfi/Parenti, T. De Bernardi, L. Di Costanzo, A. Fasulo, F. Ferraro, M. Frammartino, S. George, ghezzi/Gagliardo, C. Hintermann, G. Maderna, A. Momo, A. Rossetto, M. Santini, C. Simon, S. Savona) to give us their own "lost road," that is, a sequence, scene or piece of editing that did not later find its way into the final version of one of their works. Each fragment has its own accomplished presence, often has a different title from the film it was made for, which is not necessary to have seen in order to find meaning; on the contrary, those who set out thinking they know the world they are walking through will find themselves displaced.

Eric Clapton: The Definitive 24 Nights - Orchestral

In 1990, Eric Clapton performed 18 nights at one of his favourite venues - the famous Royal Albert Hall in London. During the 18 run of shows, Clapton performed with three different line-ups: a rock band, a blues band, and an orchestra. Eric returned to the same venue in 1991 with the same three line-ups and played a further 24 shows. The huge undertaking of rehearsing for performances of three distinctly different genres was made even more challenging by the line-up for the rock shows varying from 4, 9 or 13 band members.

Future Comes at the Right Time

Today, sexual freedom and gender self-determination are punishable by arrest or death in several countries. This short film tells the story of Nelson and his escape to Italy after a violent assault. He was born 25 years ago in Benin City, one of the most unstable areas of Nigeria. In 2018, the territorial commission that examined his case found his testimony insufficiently credible and rejected his application for international protection. In 2021, Nelson appealed to the Venice Tribunal. While awaiting his verdict, which may take months, Nelson spends his days working, hanging out with friends and making music, hoping to one day become a great singer.
