Aital

Aital is the last in a long line of Sakha shamen, supporting his disabled brother by making house calls in the Sakha city of Yakutsk alongside his unscrupulous business partner. Disillusioned with his vocation, Aital dispenses more common sense advice than mystical succour to his clients, whose complaints range from impotence to demonic possession – but he is still haunted by the suspicion that there is something otherworldly at play. Vladimir Munkuev’s witty, humane take on the role of the supernatural in a disenchanted world demonstrates Sakha cinema’s deep concern for native traditions.

Shchedrin Suite

“Shchedrin Suite” is a candid conversation with the renowned classic. On how he fell in love and was overwhelmed by the beauty of bronze hair and green eyes: the exceptional ballerina Maya Plisetskaya not only became his devoted life companion but also a cherished soul. On how many times he resisted compromising his own conscience and yielding to the omnipotent system. It delves into the composer’s creativity as a profound mystery and an ongoing process. It also reflects on the geniuses whom fate brought into his life: Shostakovich, Rostropovich, Gergiev, and Pierre Cardin. Lastly, it contemplates the world’s current state from the perspective of age and experience.

Ascension

Definitively proving that all the "B" Science Fiction of the 1950s and 1960s do not hold a candle to the 'real thing,' Pavel Medvedev's surreal 45 minute documentary Ascension is certainly one to look for. Composed entirely out of archival footage, much of it from the Soviet science and space archives, delicately scored and building to an undeniable mood of surreal (perhaps even ominous) energy, it charts (and re-purposed) the progress of man into to the unknown area of space exploration with a flair for creating art out film that was shot by scientists and engineers as a mundane record.

In the Deathroom

It was a death room. Holodov knew it for what it was as soon as the door opened. The floor was gray industrial tile. The walls were green stone, marked here and there with darker patches that might have been blood—certainly blood had been spilled in this room. The overhead lights were cupped in wire cages. Halfway across the room stood a long wooden table with two people seated behind it. Beside the chair stood a small wheeled trolley. The object on it had been draped with a piece of cloth, as a sculptormight cover his work!

Ice Hole

All day long the TV shows an ice-hole. Ice-holes are the theme of the day, a winter tradition that unites believers and sportsmen, stars and walruses, the president and the unemployed. In the centre of the news reports are the topics of Baptism, fishing and the criminal chronicle. The president and a pike, the artist and the crit- ics, the oligarch and the law enforcement team – they all meet at an ice- hole in search of solutions for their problems. The jobless Muscovite, with bad habits, dives down an ice-hole for a wife, just like Sadko. The fairy- tale plots intertwine with documentary context, and it is no longer clear where reality ends. Remember Nietzsche: if you long gaze into the abyss, the abyss will also gaze into you.
