Die Kinder von St. Georg - Erste Schuljahre

St. Georg is considered a "problem district" in Hamburg. It is not uncommon for 70 percent of the students at schools there to be foreigners, as is the case at the school where the children portrayed in the film are experiencing their first year of school: the filmmakers accompanied five children from different families and with different cultural backgrounds over a period of several years. The clash of different cultures shapes the children's everyday lives, but proves to be less problematic than the typical difficulties all children face: conflicts with their parents and finding their place among their schoolmates. The documentary takes the children's perspective and provides exciting insights into their everyday lives, feelings, and dreams.

Foramen Magnum

Rami Be'er's Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company opened proceedings with a large scale piece, Foramen Magnum, which showed off the physical talents of his company well. Childish needs were served by having much of the early action take place inside a transparent "bouncy castle"; later it matures on to a large inflatable mattress, on which a delicately erotic duet was played out. Around these, the large corps de ballet occupied itself with a set of curious collapsible wooden props, used sometimes for ploughing and sometimes as beach chairs. Some imaginative dance was not well served by lighting which made it difficult to watch the dancers' feet, ugly costumes which hampered their movement, and a constantly jarring choice of ill-assorted music which ranged from Dowland to "Send in the Clowns".

Late Autumn Afternoon Sonata: Our Choir's Trip to Großarl in October 2009

Director Fabuli Schnibuli's cinematic tour de force whisks audiences away on a poetic, melancholic journey with singing seniors – cardigan-clad artists searching for meaning in a world devoid of it – to picturesque Marktgemeinde Großarl. Daring and delightfully unhinged, the film transcends all boundaries and conventions: It is a meandering ode to the absurdity and fragility of life, a profound meditation on the human condition, a dreamlike tapestry of past and present, remembrance and oblivion, and a subtle critique of local pastry culture. With his wit and sensitivity, Schnibuli conjures a haunting and ethereal hymn to nature's beauty and human intimacy, all underscored by the gentle rustling of leaves, the babbling of streams, the resonance of Günther's remarkable baritone. Those who embrace this thought-provoking and inspiring opportunity to rediscover their lives in the subjunctive will lose themselves and find themselves again – a true testament to the possibilities of cinema!
