Reflections in the Dust

“I don’t believe in love because I’ve never seen it,” responds a young woman to an unseen interviewer in the first few minutes of the movie. This bleak portrait of loneliness and social exclusion is set on the edge of a desolate swamp where an aging clown and his daughter are struggling to survive. The location could be the end of the world, a place where hope has vanished along with a belief in the afterlife and the existence of God. The two unfortunates live together without the likelihood of change, as fear, aggression, and anger take hold of them – but they also experience sudden moments of tenderness.

Silencio (Proof of Concept)

Inspired by the philosophical musings of Terrence Malick and Ron Fricke, this film serves as a profound testament to the interconnectedness of land and life, exploring the infinite cycles that govern our existence. Much like Fricke's Samsara, the narrative delves into the ebb and flow of nature, observing the beauty of the natural world with the consequences of human actions. The film invites viewers to reflect on our place within these cycles, highlighting moments of harmony and disarray as communities adapt to the changing tides of existence. Through this lens, the work raises crucial questions about sustainability, identity, and the future of youth culture in a rapidly evolving world, ultimately urging a contemplative dialogue on our shared responsibilities towards both the environment and one another.

Guardian

Guardian chronicles the work of wildlife stewards amid sweeping legislative rollbacks of environmental protections in Canada. Part hermit, part biologist, Guardians live on boats, full-time, in one of the last pristine frontiers of the world to monitor salmon, the backbone of the ecosystem, economy, and culture along British Columbia's coast. But, in an age of science censorship and soaring resource extraction in the form of fracking for oil and natural gas, Guardians and the wildlife they have dedicated their lives to protect are now disappearing.

Xerces Blau

Xerces Blau (the title refers to Glaucopsyche xerces, an extinct butterfly species) expounds on the themes visited by Ferraro on his latest album Requiem for Recycled, released in spring 2019, with both pieces reflecting on human civilization’s intervention into natural processes and its impact on the course of evolution. The four-part visuals, developed with the implementation of machine learning, feature dynamic hybrid imagery in which shots of butterflies and plants are overlaid with scary views of environmental catastrophes, real and fictional man-made landscapes, random urban photographs, and reproductions of artworks. By mixing together the natural and the anthropogenic, Miller visualizes the feeling of overabundance resulting from cultural and technical overproduction.

Personal Growth

"Personal Growth" is a Super-8 film work, an enigmatic, fragmented piece that could have been filmed at any point in the past sixty years. It conveys the haunting charge of a privately made home movie of great significance to its creators but unsettlingly mysterious to viewers. Its grainy, black and white texture vividly renders the elemental coastal seascapes where it was filmed. Langan & Le Cain appear as a couple who inhabit this wild terrain as if it were a domestic arena.
