And Life Goes On

The Number 2 Lake Biwa School has cared for severely physically handicapped children for over 40 years. The renovation of the old and crumbling facilities provided the inspiration for making this film, which mixes 16mm synch sound sequences of the lives of the people in the home and their families with 8mm footage from the time when the school was founded and the earlier years of some of the inhabitants. Each of the residents has a different story to tell. One of the long-term residents decides to leave the facility and move to a more independent halfway house set up by the residents, causing his parents to worry. Another resident is wholly dependent on an artificial respirator and can only communicate by moving his eyes. As the seasons change, so the small dramas in the school unfold.

Echoes from the Miike Mine

On March 30, 1997, the Miike Coal Mine, the largest mine in Japan, ceased operations. The burden of its history, however, is still being borne by many: a chronicle of prisoners used in the mine, forced labor, strikes, and coal dust explosions. This documentary is the first to directly confront the legacy of the Miike Mine, reviving through eyewitness testimonies a history of struggle lasting 150 years that modern Japan is trying to forget. It took seven years to complete, interviewing over 70 individuals, from the men and women who signed up to do this backbreaking work and lived in pride by the mountain, to the Koreans who were forcibly brought to Japan and made to work down the shaft. The director Hiroko Kumagai hopes that we look at Miike not just to explore the past, but also to think about the future: what it means to work and to live courageously.

It was shot through a toy 35mm camera with 16 lenses, which would take a series of 16 images consecutively within a few seconds in two rows on 35mm film, spreading on two regular 35mm frames for still photography – the mechanism is similar to the device that Eadweard Muybridge created to photograph a horse galloping in 1887, before the movie camera was invented. The film shows an event at Tokyo Racecourse when it was holding the 2008 Japanese Derby (Tokyo Yushun), the biggest event of the year, where the excitement of each race would last about 2 minutes and 30 seconds. This toy camera was not designed to produce a movie, so the bouncing visual displays the uniqueness of this particular toy camera, while it might also echo the vigorous movements of the racing horses.

Pale Kiss - Count Dracula's Love-

"I shall give eternal life only to beautiful things...." While visiting London in 1887, Count Dracula of Romania exchanges promises with the daughter of a multi-millionaire. The romance of vampire legends has traveled about for hundreds of years, and in 1987 Star Troupe performed this production with Shion Yuu in the pivotal role. This very popular show was a unique theme for Takarazuka-- the first act is on classical and aesthetic beauty, and the second act is a more modern pop style of Count Dracula's love.

NO RESPECT

The main character, Aoi Natsume, is a high school girl who lives peacefully with her father, Wataru. The band activities with her best friends, Haruka and Nozomi, were in turmoil ahead of her university entrance exams the following year. One day, she happened to get Ao's novel "LOST IN TIME". The story surrounding her one girl was too similar to her own upbringing. Her mother died shortly after she was born, and her father kept his mouth shut about the past. The next day, with the novel in hand, Ao's long journey of self-discovery began.

Hashi

A film that deals with very relevant issues in our everyday lives, Hashi centres on 3 women from 3 age groups - Shino(50s), Junko(30s) and Momo(20s). Momo is a bento (box lunch) delivery girl who sends bento lunches to Shino and Junko, who are colleagues in an office. Momo would always tell her dreams to Shino or Junko. One day Shino gets a call from an ex-boyfriend whom she has not met for 30 years. Junko has doubts about her relationship with her boyfriend. Their 3 lives cross and diverge in oblique and tangential ways. As the story weaves around issues of love, relationships, insecurity, death and the blurring between dreams and reality, the men in their lives are always present but hardly seen or heard.
