Leonardo Bastião, The Illiterate Poet

In Itapetim’s countryside, deep inside Sertão do Pajeú in the Pernambuco backlands lives Leonardo Bastião in a rammed earth housing, a poet who, even without knowing how to read or write, built through his improvised metrical poetry and his relationship with the local environment an overwhelming cultural universe. After a lifetime of anonymity, videos of Leonardo declaiming authorial verses surfaced online and reached millions of views and even gave birth to a book transcribed by fans. In 2019, at the age of 74, the illiterate poet reflects on life, nature and homesickness, while scholars of popular culture try to explain the media and linguistic phenomenon that is his life and work.

Experiencing the Flooding Red

The performance here is a device for creating counter-narratives, projectile bullets, decolonizing the image of the black woman. They are violent images, they are precarious actions, they are postgraduate research, they are articles in magazines and newspapers, they are contradictory, they are destructible. I will point out sounds and words of invisible people from institutional space, I propose a guerrilla of knowledge, in an attempt to reactivate ancestral memories and knowledge, to produce dissensions in bodies marked by coloniality.

Cocoon

“With blurred vision it is difficult to see anything around. My eyes have grown tired of this artificial light. My lungs pull the air in a spasm even though I don't remember holding my breath. Just another craze. Adrenaline fills me. The air is always the same, I need to get out. My legs hurt, crack. If in the last 24 hours I got out of bed, it is a source of personal pride. I'm wasting time. I need to get out. Get out of that room, get out of the scenario I created myself. Get out of me.”

Santa

Inspired by real events, Santa tells the story of a transsexual woman who lives in a rural community in Minas Gerais. She was born and grew up among the festivities of the small church of the place, with a burning desire to crown the image of Our Lady. Santa raises the flag against the mining company that explores the site and that in addition to deforesting, threatens with its residues the spring and the waterfall of the place. But she meets Cícero, the mining company's new supervisor and falls in love with him. In “Santa” there is no violence for the sake of gender and sexual difference, because Santa is completely inserted in the social life of the community and is known, respected and loved by everyone.
