Where the Heart Goes_Poetry Collection

Where the Heart Goes_Poetry Collection is a disorienting film that embodies the fatigue and emptiness of material culture and its blinding optimism. Questioning the fast cycle of cultural production, Choi recycles her exhibition into a context and material for a shapeshifting film in which a group of performers play the spirit medium of the unattended. The resulting film enacts trance like rituals – a dramatic monologue, ghostly rave party and wistful self-affirmation – with an animistic imagination. Colliding references to the horror genre with pop spiritualism, Choi choreographs feelings of disillusionment induced by the pressure to constantly “upload” and “update”.

Get Some Sunshine

A lady in her mid-70s was social and active. Although she took heart medicine every day, she continued to participate in various gatherings and activities. However, after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, she gave up all outdoor activities, spending most of her time in or around the home. Since then, she has unfurled conversations with plants on the balcony, plants in the kitchen, and those rooted in the vegetable garden too. ‘Get Some Sunshine’ explores a day in the life of this lady (the film director’s mother) and the solidarity she developed with companion plants during the pandemic.

After Coma

"In this film, 7 short poems are introduced both in Korean and in English. Each scene is represented by different poems that manifests symbolic images and sounds. "This is a film about the process of grief and facing the loss of my father. It tells the story of where it has left me as well as the last moments I had with him. Not only is this my own method of processing these complex emotions but it is also my way of sharing this experience with others who have and will go through the same experience. It was crucial for this project to be shot on film because the format holds a symbolic significance. Just like film, grief needs time to be processed and to be taken care of gently." — K.S.

Taean

During the Korean War in 1950, the Bodo League massacre began in Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. On July 12 of that year, Taean Police Station massacred 115 civilians just before retreating from the 'fraudulent reality'. At that time, state power massacred these civilians only through the assumption that they would sympathize with the People's Army, which is about to occupy Taean. The damage in Taean didn't stop here. The People's Army, which occupied Taean, massacred 116 civilians on the grounds that it would punish the reaction. However, this was only a preview of the catastrophe that was to follow.

Rosha

The Rorschach Inkblot Test was created by Hermann Rorschach, a Swiss psychiatrist, in 1921. The test employs a series of ten inkblot cards, and the test taker is asked to provide their perceptions or perspectives on the presented images. The test was considered effective in identifying and diagnosing schizophrenia and was administered to Nazi war criminals in an attempt to understand the Nazi personality. Often criticized as pseudoscience, the Rorschach is still used and remains controversial. The test is often referred to as Ro-sha (short for Rorschach) in Korea. The film Rosha tells stories spoken by a girl named Rosha. It is a photogram of the ten inkblot images on B&W 16mm film. The images overlap and break apart, leaving impressions on the film surface. When the film is projected, the printed inkblots turn into Rosha's glossolalia,* which lies between language and non-language.

When Elephants Come to Town

The film "When Elephants Come to Town" is heavily defined by its rhythm. Hyejeong Yun frees themselves from linear narrative structures and chooses a subject-centric narrative out of multimedia-based documentary methods. From this, Hyejeong combines their own experiences and observations with found footage film and collective euro-centric myths. – everyday experiences and institutionalised balances of power – In these connections, she is creating multi-sensory collages of photography, sound and film.

Bertinker

Bertinker (2022) begins with the real but lost myth of an insect constellation called 'Musca', the only one of its kind in Uranometria, a star map created by German celestial cartographer Johann Bayer. In doing so, the artist presents a real-life subject accompanied by a physical object that may soon disappear, to offer a new perspective on the boundary between fiction and reality. For example, Han’s image collages, deconstructed from the flow of the scenario, are composed of prints and drawings on 16mm film, summoning the physical external conditions that are played through a projector.
