Adrift Potentials

This pseudo diary film is made of found materials from an unfinished 16mm film. Potenciais à Deriva is a film started by a Brazilian artist under a pseudonym while living in exile in Los Angeles, California. Isolated shots and previously assembled scenes reveal an intention to create a mysterious film comprised of disembodied interviews, empty rooms, radio recordings, soccer games, and sudden apparitions of the filmmaker that slowly ruminates on Brazil's colonial past, North American Imperialism and the military dictatorship of the time in a paranoid and anxious manner. Be aware that the film's final version never came to exist. This version presented is my mere attempt to produce a film with these otherwise lost images.

Aqueles Dias

The last years of the 10s were not easy. We had a World War, the Spanish flu pandemic, the first strikes in Brazil, and frosts threatening coffee plantations, announcig the beginning of a transition from rural to urban areas. And, in the midst of all this, painters, musicians and writers propose new paths for art. Set in the period from 1917 to 1922, the series presents the influences of all these events in a group of friends formed by Anita Malfatti, Oswald de Andrade, Mário de Andrade, Menotti Del Picchia and Tarsila do Amaral, who are willing to lead the changes they believe need to be made. With them, we will follow the first steps towards the creation of the transformative movement Brazilian Modernism.

1798 - Revolta dos Búzios

One of the most important events in Brazilian history, the Búzios Revolt of 1798 was led by dozens of black men who rose up to overthrow the colonial government, proclaim independence and establish a democratic Republic, free from slavery. The boldness of these men called on the people to make the Revolution and the conspiracy spread to the city of Bahia. The seizure of power is near. But the movement is denounced, the government sets up a Devassa against hundreds of people and four of them are hanged and quartered.

Nobody Leaves Alive

“Nobody Leaves Alive” by André Ristum is shot in beautiful but also distancing black and white. Looking at the Venice line-up, this seems to be a trend this year among the maestros of cinema. The film is inspired by true events that took place in the last century in the “Colonia” hospital in Brazil. Whoever didn’t fit the standards of society, or their family’s perception of it, was locked away, tortured, and killed. There were altogether more than 60,000 victims. Hope dies last, and some of the inmates don’t give up the fight. We’re reminded of film classics such as “One Flew Over the Cookoo’s Nest” or “Alcatraz”.
