The Collective

Adventuring to undiscovered peaks together, plotting midnight-raids on inner-city handrails, lapping your home run until that last ray of sunshine disappears behind a distant ridge - Skiing is Collective. Some call it a tribe mentality, others call it a shared sense of purpose. This film is our definition, written by a diverse team, each with their own ideas, their own forms of expression. "The Collective" is more than a sum of its parts. No matter who you are or where you come from - it feels good to be part of something special.

Exile

Zacharias Kunuk tackles the subject of the High Arctic Relocation from an Inuit point of view in the documentary Exile. In 1953, Inuit families were forcibly relocated to the uninhabited and inhospitable high arctic, 1500 kilometres north of their traditional homeland of Nunavik, in northern Québec. The goal of the move was to extend Canadian claims of sovereignty to Ellesmere Island. As a result, Inuit people were forced to endure the pain of families torn apart and many years of hardship. With devastating first-person accounts of survival, the trail of broken promises and shameful practices of the government and the RCMP, this powerful documentary captures the long-standing effects of these events from the perspectives of the people who were forced to endure them.

Do You Really Want to Know?

A documentary about the complex emotional, ethical and psychological issues surrounding the new frontier of predictive genetic testing. The film follows three families who have been confronted with the decision of whether or not to be tested for Huntington's disease - a degenerative neurological illness that is akin to having ALS, Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's simultaneously - and one of the first diseases people could be accurately and conclusively tested for, before the onset of any symptoms. As scientists discover more ways to identify diseases before we know we have them, "do you really want to know?" will be a question more and more of us will face.

Rupert's Land

In this Canadian road movie, two brothers who haven't seen each other in years are uncomfortably reunited when they have to travel together from Vancouver to remote Prince Rupert for their father's funeral. Rupert is a stuffy lawyer who has emigrated to Canada, while Dale ekes out a living dealing drugs. Along the way, they find themselves stranded in a commune where their father once lived, populated by a pack of half hippie/half redneck dropouts who like to get high on mushrooms and drive trucks. George Wendt appears in a supporting role.

Bodies of Water

The film invites you to hold your breath and let yourself be transported and transformed by water in the company of curious individuals. At nightfall, they take over a public swimming pool. These bodies of water, immersed in the aquatic mass, transgress the limits of their natural environment and undergo a metamorphosis. They then engage in a contemporary dance that reveals them in a different light. The aquatic environment makes them supple and light, but also vulnerable and combative. This poetic, enveloping, and suffocating mass unites them, separates them, and constitutes them. The film explores the transformation of human bodies when they interact with water—a fluid and adaptable medium that simultaneously offers resistance. It plunges you underwater for an immersive experience that reveals a rare and otherwise inaccessible contemporary dance.
