The Fossil Story

In this film, Shell Oil situates its extractive process as an episode within geologic time, naturalizing its products even as it inspires wonder. It contrasts the impatience of the suburban husband wanting to drive his car against the expansive scale of fossil history. According to Shell, with the drilling of oil, “The cycle is complete. Nature’s plan is quite perfect” – the question of where we might fall within such a purported cycle, and what nature may have in store for us, remains an open one.

Procedure in the Traffic Courtroom

Contrasts the traffic court of the horse and buggy era with that of today. Points out that traffic court cases must be kept separate from others and that the court must demand and earn respect. Presents examples of good traffic courtroom procedure emphasizing such aspects as the formal opening, initial remarks by the judge outlining rights and obligations of defendants, trial procedure, and formal closing. Emphasizes that it is the traffic court judge's responsibility to increase respect for judicial authority.

Gyromorphosis

According to the director, "Gyromorphosis strives to bring into actuality the inherent kinetic qualities seen in the construction-sculpture of Constant Nieuwenhuys of Amsterdam. To realize this aim I have put into motion, one by one, pieces of this sculpture and, with colored lighting, filmed them in various detail, overlaying the images on the film as they appear and disappear. In this way, I have hoped to produce sensations of acceleration and suspension which are suggested to me by the sculpture itself."

Und die Kinder spielen so gern Soldaten

And the children love to play soldiers. This 10-minute anti-war film lost to posterity was a very loose adaptation of Franz Kafka's short story In the Penal Colony. Vesely presents the execution of a prisoner of war as a serial event that happens over and over again, ad nauseum. As of this project, Tichat worked as set designer and occasional co-author for Vesely, here also appearing in front of the camera as an actor together with H.C. Artmann. Gerhard Ruhm contributed his Musique concrete to the soundtrack.
