Be Different Today

Juliana Capes and Ruth Barrie’s Be Different Today explores the relationship between text and image – signifier and signified, thing and descriptor – through a moving-image document of seven sunrises and visual description prompted by same. What may conceptually suggest a duplication of intentions, however – show, and tell – also begins to point to something deeper: the connection between the elemental and the personal, a cosmic event and the word-thoughts it prompts, the way in which language is governed.

Capsules / Portraits

In this video, I’m trying to produce a writing stuck to reality and in dialogue with my « Inner space ». Writing as a subjective camera in order to create different portraits … Drill through poetry the singularity that I perceive in the banal and the exceptional. Let the videos be perception points of reality which are violent, touching, dirty and splendid at the same time. I have a kind of caustic tenderness for the world around me. I am fascinated by its filthy side and its deep beauty at the same time.

Arho – The Afar Salt Trade of Northeastern Ethiopia

The documentary follows the journey of a camel caravan to the salt plains of the Afar Depression. Traditionally the caravans moved from Afar Depression to other parts of Ethiopia and to the Red Sea coastal regions of modern-day Eritrea and Djibouti. For centuries the control, trade and distribution of salt was of primary importance in the articulation of economic, social, and political life of the nomadic communities living along the caravan trails. Since 2010, trucks have slowly replaced the camel caravans. This has led to a steady decline in the trade. The film, relying on strong visual imagery and traditional Afar music, selected by the participant of this project, documents how the decline of this trade affects the daily life of the communities in Berahle district of North-eastern Ethiopia.

Character One: Susan

Susan is a glamorous train wreck: a delusional drug-addict and psychotic who compares herself to the likes of Maria Callas, Romy Schneider, Monica Bellucci and Désirée Nick. Her childhood ended when she was sexually abused for the first time at the age of 11. Even though she has a strong personality and speaks five languages fluently, she was never able to take care of herself. In the 1990s, she became one of the IT Girls of the post-reunification party scene in Berlin. She only feels safe among gay men. Decades of drug-abuse may have destroyed her brain, but not her personality.

Higher, stronger, more robust: crane builders outperform with superlatives. Loads are getting heavier and have to be lifted to hard-to-reach places. One of the largest crane companies in Germany is the Knaack Krane company in Hamburg. The company currently has around 60 different cranes in stock, the largest of which can lift up to 750 tons. It is a long way through planning and assembly until the machine is used for the first time - the report accompanies the creation of a mega crane.
