Back in the Park

“This is a work that evolved out of play and a sudden impulse. I had been recording footage for a work in Midtown Manhattan. On one particular occasion it was not a productive day for me. As a result I felt a bit stressed out, and began to just drift through the streets. It was a cool and pleasant afternoon. There were a lot of people relaxing at Bryant Park, so I stepped into the park myself. Within less than a minute, and without a conscious motive in mind, I grabbed the camera out of my pocket and began to exercise my own form of pleasure and relaxation: moving the camera through space, caressing or playing with shapes, and forms as well as shadows. Later on, in spirit of that afternoon and out of the recorded footage, I composed Back in the Park.” - Ernie Gehr

Through the Darkness

The poignant story of a love triangle that upended the life of one of the most important figures of 20th-century classical music. Composer Arnold Schoenberg befriended painter Richard Gerstl, a young man who shared the revered musician's passion for art—but that was not the only love they shared, as Schoenberg's wife also found herself drawn to the mysterious figure who was Gerstl. The drama and tragedy that ensued also cleared the way for one of the most groundbreaking aesthetic shifts in music history.

Blanchard: Fire Shut Up in My Bones

Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Grammy Award–winning jazz musician and composer Terence Blanchard’s adaptation of Charles M. Blow’s moving memoir, which The New York Times praised after its 2019 world premiere at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as “bold and affecting” and “subtly powerful.” The first opera by a Black composer presented on the Met stage and featuring a libretto by filmmaker Kasi Lemmons, the opera tells a poignant and profound story about a young man’s journey to overcome a life of trauma and hardship. James Robinson and Camille A. Brown—two of the creators of the Met’s sensational recent production of Porgy and Bess—co-direct this new staging, which appears in cinemas on October 23. Baritone Will Liverman, one of opera’s most exciting young artists, stars as Charles, alongside sopranos Angel Blue as Destiny/Loneliness/Greta and Latonia Moore as Billie.

The Gazer

A grounded sci-fi short film that delivers hope with a slight touch of humor. Jack was a promising scholar until his dedication to prove the existence of extra-terrestrial life consumed him into a mundane, repetitive cycle. THE GAZER is the story of Jack. Jack owns a small alien jerky shop in the desert. Aside from the occasional lost tourist, and a lizard hanging around his shop, Jack finds himself completely isolated. After his repetitive daily pattern is mysteriously interrupted, Jack is reminded of the passion and hope he once had to prove the existence of extra terrestrial life. Set in the vein of Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of The Third Kind, E.T., and Colin Trevorrow's Safety Not Guaranteed, The Gazer has nods to classic '70s and 80's grounded sci-fi films with brief moments of hyper-realism.

The documentary 'Nasir Jani Melawan Lembaga Puaka' follows the journey of this cult film-maker 'Kembara Seniman Jalanan' in reflecting on the complex culture of censorship in Malaysia. The clash of Mahathirism at the beginning of his reign to the ironic authoritarian culture, this documentary also responds to the supportive perspective of young filmmakers, Amanda Nell Eu and Steven Sarathbabu who struggle and dribble with the logic of censorship and what happens behind it.
