Schönheiten des Alpsteins

Unique images illustrate the contrasts that exist in a seemingly unknown world, even though it is right on one’s doorstep. In relation to the genre, this film with a regional background is highly unique, portraying nature and life in the Alps – between Säntis and Hoher Kasten. Thomas Rickenmann wants to inspire the viewer with the simplicities in life, with the ordinary, and he succeeds in doing so. The basis for this is established with the countless contrasts that are found in this small space. The fact that he opted to do without external sound effects serves to underscore his intent of immersing the viewer in this different, but yet familiar world. He has set the film to accommodate the pace of life on the alp, where it’s not the minutes that count but rather how one deals with nature. By all means, the film can be described as “wellness for the mind”.

Amorous, Antiquated, Audacious

Vienna the 1950s and 60s: it was not exactly an easy time for lesbians. The film is about how they lived, how they dressed and the places where they met. The two directors spent five years researching the traces of a forgotten past. Using places to create a common theme, the film builds an imaginary bridge between the Vienna of fifty years ago and the Vienna of today. Through the words of the three elderly women we see an unusual and important example of oral history, which helps us to understand the imposed models of behaviour women of that time had to follow to conceal their sexual orientation: to hint but not to say, to appear without being recognized.

Wound Footage

The source material is a found footage super 8 film. The visual carrier was attacked in a multitude of ways. It was scratched, cut open and violated. I captured an attempt to screen it. There it burned and was destroyed by the projector. Sorry little film. With the video footage I provoked the encoding. As a result some pixels were dislocated. In the end I reshot the film from the monitor while I somehow angered the cables that connect the monitor with my computer. That all may sound very negative to you but the goal was an almost humanist one: Unification of the digital with the analogue world. They seem so far apart and yet they aren’t. By exposing every material’s weaknesses and injuries it was made one. It’s all visual sensations in the end. Rita Hayworth grindedly sings along.
