The Postman

The autistic postman had been diligently delivering mail since childhood. The whole town knew and loved him, and a few families held a special place in his heart. One day, he couldn’t bring himself to deliver a death notice. Instead, he wrote a “letter from the front”. From then on, he replaced death notices with letters, and no one ever suspected the deception because the postman was a talented man – his letters seemed to be written by different people. But this didn’t last long, because during wartime, the military authorities closely monitored the mail.

Baikonur

“Whatever falls from heaven, you may keep.” So goes the unwritten law of the Kazakh steppes. A law avidly adhered to by the inhabitants of a small village, who collect the space debris that falls downrange from the nearby Baikonur space station. The last two youthful members of the village are the radio operator Iskander, known as Gagarin, and the spirited Nazira. While Nazira finds it increasing difficult to conceal her love for Iskander by means of her unconventional behaviour, Iskander is evidently not only crazy about Baikonur and the vastness of outer space, but also deeply smitten with the beautiful French astronaut Julie Mahé, whose journey to the stars he wistfully follows on television.

Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin

Inspired by Pushkin's masterpiece of Russian literature, Tchaikovsky’s opera provides a sublime portrait – both ironic and sympathetic – of a character embittered by society life, rejecting love out of vanity, killing his friend the poet Lenski out of pride and spending the rest of his days in abject despair. A repertoire classic, Willy Decker’s streamlined production makes the Paris Opera echo once more to the strains of Russian romantic music. Edward Gardner conducts an exceptional cast including Peter Mattei in the title role and Anna Netrebko as Tatiana.

Operation Z

The year is 1937 — the end of the first stage of the Sino-Japanese war. The Mikado’s military aircraft have all but destroyed the Chinese Air Force, and Japanese ground forces occupy the entire north of the country. China moves its capital to Wuhan. Given the increasing Japanese threat, the Soviet Union comes to the rescue of China, sending airborne equipment and crews of volunteer pilots to the country. These staunch professionals fly to China at their own risk: under foreign names, in civilian clothes, and without documents. We tell the story of the Chinese and Soviet pilots who overcame linguistic and cultural barriers to unite and defeat the superior Japanese forces in what at that time was the largest air battle in world history — the battle for Wuhan.

The Blood of the Blockade

The film tells how in the iron blockade of the blockade worked "the blood factory", the Institute of blood transfusion that provided the Leningrad front and the city in this strategic resource: blood donation. The blood bond between the city and its defenders was a very important factor in breaking the blockade and finally crushing the enemy. Due to a prolonged lack of food and a very great psychic stress the blood of the inhabitants of Leningrad has undergone phenomenal biochemical transformations which have had consequences for the following generations. The hypothesis confirmed by the latest research by geneticists and biologists is that this 900-day "forced fast" suffered by people during the blockade gave a post-war generation with a specific mentality and a spirit of sacrifice of the inhabitants. from Saint Petersburg.

Dreiden Suite

In September 2016, the St. Petersburg artist Sergey Dreyden turns 75 years old. He rehearses new plays, is shot by young directors. It is not assigned to any theater, it does not belong to any group. It exists by itself, suddenly appearing on one or another scene. The film is a unique experience of documentary observation of an actor for several years. The basis of the plot is rehearsals of one role in the performance of the St. Petersburg Youth Theater "Wine from dandelions, or Zamri." The process of the birth of a character is no less exciting and interesting than the performance itself. Around the main "rehearsal" story - episodes from life, stories about childhood against the background of their own drawings, paintings.

Hey! Teachers!

Two young intellectuals, Katya and Vassya, come to a small industrial town to work as teachers. They want to change the system of scholastic education and the social situation in difficult regions. The school is a closed conservative world, where obedience and discipline are of the highest value. Young teachers discover that nationalism, sexism and homophobia are typical for their new environment. Children see the school as a prison and are completely indifferent to any new ideas. During one school year we observe attempts of our protagonists to bring new practices into the system. Young teachers try to speak with children about feminism, human rights and Russian politics, but the system pushes them out, and a comedy turns into a drama.

Three Sisters

Preserving the text of the play, the amazing dialogues, the brilliant characters, we have transposed the action into today’s Russian provinces and changed only one thing: the age of the heroes. In Anton Chekhov’s play the heroines are aged around 25; now they are 55. What does that do? The heroes’ retorts, stylistically inappropriate from today’s twenty-year-olds, are absolutely organic for the older generation, the ‘Soviet’ intelligentsia. The problems of Chekhov’s classical work concerning the search for a meaning in life, the loss of ideals, the fear before death without having achieved anything in the world, the desire to be useful to others – all these things are also a typical attribute of the Soviet intelligentsia.

A Night at Paradjanov's Museum

The film is a unique tribute of the director to his master. The space is empty, in the sense, there are no people there, but the items live their peculiar life until the rooster cries out. And that is be the rooster Parajanov made, God knows of what kind of improvised material at hand. It feels like the wind is a night walker here and it turns over the pages of the books. Glass breaking can be heard. The good thing is there are enough collages made of phials and luxurious tableware set fragments. The dolls sit on the frames, letting their legs hang, just like they do in daytime, but something mystical, something fateful appears in them. And Parajanov is close, built-into some other life, in epaulets or even with the people of past epochs. The lamps are switched on, even the oil stoves – everything is the way Parajanov liked. But then it is daybreak already, the rooms are filled with sunlight, and everything changes.

Thunderstorm

The action unfolds in our days, in the small Volga town of Kalinov, where nothing has changed since the days of Alexander Ostrovsky’s classical play: if any rays of light do appear in the dark empire, then they are doomed to perish quietly in the general absurdity and ignorance, or shine brightly as a token of protest against lie and tyranny.
