A Life for the Tsar

Glinka's "patriotic-heroic tragic opera" in four acts 'A Life for the Tsar' or 'Ivan Susanin' (as it was known during the Soviet era), recorded live at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1992, and starring Evgeny Nesterenko, Marina Mescheriakova, Alexander Lomonosov and Elena Zaremba, with the chorus and orchestra of the Bolshoi, conducted by Alexander Lazarev. The historical basis of the plot involves Ivan Susanin, a patriotic hero of the early 17th century who died in the expulsion of the invading Polish army for the newly elected Tsar Michael of Russia, the first of the Romanov dynasty, elected in 1613.

The Brethren

THE BRETHREN is a documentary about the monks of the world's northernmost monastery -- the Trifonov Pechengsky monastery located in Kolsky Peninsula, Russia. It was Russia's Northern outpost a few centuries ago. Later it was destroyed and abolished, and now it is being restored. The brethren of this monastery is small: 4 hieromonks and 2 monks. They are young, and every one of them has had his personal way to monastic ordination. All their life stories are nontrivial and even paradoxical. They are attempting not only to restore the buildings of the monastery but to build a temple in their hearts. The film features unique footage of the inner life of the monastery.

Valera has to decide on a dilemma: to save mankind from the Deluge or just to fly with his karaoke-alien-friends in their old UFO? All these things can happen only once a year – on December, 31!

My Father Evgeni

This is a film made by Andriy Zagdansky about his father, the screenwriter Yevgeni Zagdansky, who was the editor-in-chief of the Kyivnaukfilm studio for almost 20 years. The story is interspersed with fragments of popular science films and letters from Yevgeni Zagdansky to his son in New York in the 1990s, creating a portrait of both the person himself and the whole era. My Father Evgeni is a film not just about the inevitable generational conflict and the pain of a father’s separation from his son, but also about the events of the 20th century, about people who read banned books, and about the Kyiv that shaped the Zagdanskys.

Nikolai Gogol's Hand

The film is based on a video made by Sergey Lando on the Petersburg Recording Studio at the end of March 2009, before the 200th anniversary of Nikolai Gogol. Next day, Oleg Karavaichuk took the footage and assembled film. It was first shown on April 1, 2009 in Gogol's birthday at a concert "Diary of a Madman" in Culture House "Lensovet" in St. Petersburg. This film is not about Gogol, but is dedicated to him: in the intervals of playing the piano, the composer talks about the true roots of the writer's work, about the common fate of the greatest people of art, about the synthesis of music and literature, about eternity and paradoxes.
