Collecting Materials

What has happened to Konrad Theodor Preuss's collection? Perhaps his collection is nothing more than an accumulation of dead and distant objects, a collection of traditions and popular rumours. No wonder it is called a crime scene. Any collection of materials alters the meaning of things, from relics to scraps and vice versa.Their accumulation carries with it a certain violence that consists of turning objects into archaeological objects. Thus creating sedimentary layers, linear successions, detachments, and a rupture between the versions of the past and those of the present. Archival film, found and recreated, filled with plastic gestures and encounters. Collecting Materials is a palimpsest of times and documents, a freehand ethnography, an inventory of natural wonders.

'When It Stopped Being A War': The Situated Testimony of Dr Ghassan Abu-Sittah

On 17 October 2023, a devastating explosion took place in the car park of al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City. British-Palestinian doctor and distinguished reconstructive surgeon Dr Ghassan Abu-Sittah was working at Ahli Hospital at the time of the blast. In April 2024, Forensic Architecture (FA) began working with Dr Abu-Sittah to reconstruct the events of the night as he experienced them. Using an interview practice called ‘situated testimony’, FA worked with Dr Abu-Sittah to retrace his steps through a 3D reconstruction of the hospital compound, in which FA had geolocated and ‘photomatched’ visual evidence recorded by survivors of the blast, including Dr Abu-Sittah himself, and journalists.

Street Nuisance

The work is inspired by a text of the same name, written by Charles Babbage in 1864. Better known for his computational inventions, Babbage also rose to prominence for his satirically obsessive battle against noise pollution from buskers in nineteenth-century London, advocating for silence as a civic right. Departing from this premise, Spagnola’s new video installs a street performer on loop. The video rehearses a series of outmoded archetypes—the hippie, the Californian, the rocker—and reprises the child busker character from her earlier works to reflect on the antiquated promise of self-reliance and the systematic elimination of shared experience.

Israel’s Ecocide in Gaza: 2023-2024

Since 2014, Palestinian farmers along Gaza’s perimeter have seen their crops sprayed by airborne herbicides and regularly bulldozed, and have themselves faced sniper fire by the Israeli occupation forces. Along that engineered ‘border’, sophisticated systems of fences and surveillance reinforce a military buffer zone. Since October 2023, Israel’s ground invasion has uprooted most of these orchards and systematically targeted agricultural farmlands and infrastructure throughout the besieged Strip. This investigation builds on our existing collaborations with local farmers’ associations and agricultural workers, to reveal the ongoing Israeli destruction of vegetation in Gaza and its effects on the food security and means of life for Palestinians.
