Homo Urbanus Neapolitanus

This work is a long-term research project developed until now in 10 different cities over the world: Seoul, Bogota, Naples, Saint-Petersburg, Rabat, Tokyo, Kyoto, Shanghai, Doha and Venice. Born as an artistic commission for the Agora Biennale in Bordeaux around the theme of the moving landscapes, these videos plunge into cities in a spontaneous and subjective approach with very modest means in order to translate in the closest possible way the feel of their constant moving nature: their human landscape. Presented in a comparative dynamic through the lens of a selection of themes and issues linked with the street daily life, the videos enable us to perceive each of these different urban contexts as an experimental, local and unique laboratory answering the same global challenge of how can we live all together.

Sous le donjon de Manu le Malin

One evening in 1997, invited by the Astropolis team, Manu Le Malin discovered the Keriolet castle, in Concarneau. He was then 26 years old. Two decades later, the enfant terrible of hardcore (now also popular in the techno sphere) and the ravers of the Breton point form an inseparable family. Christophe Lévêque, the hedonistic owner of the castle, continues to welcome them every year. To retrace the history of Manu Le Malin, we gathered in Keriolet those who have been with him during these two decades. A family reunion in "Snow White's castle on acid", to tell the story of this strange night bird that only the light of day can stop.

Ombra and the Poet

The story is a psycho-drama full of turns of events right from the opening scene and well after the credits. Icaro, a man in his late thirties with a wife and a child he loves and a safe job in a bank, is all of a sudden reminded of his boyhood ambition when Ombra, an eerie creature belonging to his cradle-day memories, reappears in his life. With Ombra back, nothing can ever be the same. Ancient dreams and hidden skeletons plummet the protagonist into spiraling insanity as present and past collide.

Deeds not words: The Suffragette Surgeons of WWI

This film brings to light the hidden history of the first ever British Army hospital run entirely by women. The all-female medical staff of the Endell Street Military Hospital, founded by prominent suffragette doctors Flora Murray and Louisa Garrett Anderson, treated over 26,000 wounded patients and performed over 7,000 operations during WWI. Bringing together previously unseen photographs and letters from the Women’s Library LSE with archive film from IWM, this film tells the story of the 180 women who worked at the hospital under the suffragette motto, ‘Deeds, not words’.

Our 2020s Vision

This is the Queensbury Tunnel Society's vision for the 2020s: a network of shared paths linking Bradford, Halifax and Keighley, with a rejuvenated Queensbury Tunnel as its centrepiece. These paths would improve connectivity for commuters, tempt tourists to visit the many attractions within easy reach and, critically, deliver a social and economic uplift to the area. But without Queensbury Tunnel, a significant proportion of the potential benefits will be lost. We have to save this remarkable and historic structure before concrete suffocates it.

Measure

Views of a landscape engraved directly into the emulsion of 16mm film leader using the blade of a surgical scalpel. The length of each filmstrip is determined by the distance between points on the artist’s body, such as from fingertip to fingertip between outstretched arms, and bisecting the body along a posterior/anterior axis. During our experience of these moving images, the length of a strip of film becomes a measurement of time as the static marks incised into the black 16mm frames are perceived to be lines of light in motion.
