What Sound Reminds You of Home

A cinematographic journey to that very unique time when many Russians got their first palmcorders along with their first opportunity to go on family vacation abroad. Roads, hotels, shops, water parks and cafes - everything was equally impressive and everything was saved on VHS tapes for home archives. At the same time, somewhere on the other side of the Earth the fishermen who go out to the northern seas for a long time, also take a video camera with them for the very first time.

Tree Branches

Musical film by actor Sergei Paranyushkin. One person in the frame. A loner in black jeans and a hat. Our contemporary. A man of the beginning of the 21st century. Pausing in his run to talk to himself. And with each of us. About the main thing. About the transience of the passage of time. About the disease of the century-the consumption of everything and everything, near and far. About the loneliness that burns us. About the people who make us who we are. About music as a divine gift. A salutary, timely word to a contemporary who drinks and drinks the cup of poison of the philosophy of infinite pleasure.

Redemption

A remote corner in the kingdom of nature is the ideal place for reflections about the meaning of life and the hero’s role in this world: this hero is Rodion Raskolnikov. His tactile and sincere communication with the current of the water in the clear mountain river seems to turn to the Koranic question on man’s original matter – the transparent liquid with which Raskolnikov tries to wash his face whilst dirtying himself. Water is the ‘mirror’ in which the hero sees himself, set against the issue of the ‘superflu- ous man’ and his own destination. Is he a worm? Is this worm disgusting?” – Raskol- nikov asks his reflection. The internal experiences, along with visions of the caring Sonya singing him a lullaby – are an invented reality into which Rodion has escaped, but he is forced to return to the former world, where things are not as they seemed...

Phil Esposito Friendship tour of Russia

Phil Esposito, the legendary Canadian hockey player, was one of the brightest participants in the 1972 series of hockey matches between the USSR and Canada. The film covers the period between 2012 and the present day and highlights the most significant visits of Phil Esposito to Russia. Phil talks about how these trips changed his attitude towards Russia - from a sharply negative one, which persisted for forty years after the end of the 1972 Super Series, to a respectful and friendly outlook.

I am a Hologram

This is a mockumentary about people who, for various reasons, have become holograms... So, scientists have launched an experiment - a person has the opportunity to abandon the existence in the body, to become digital by translating into a hologram. It is impossible to return back to the body. A holographic person still has memory, consciousness, sight, hearing, and the ability to speak. Ordinary people see holograms without special devices and can come into contact with them... A new technology that changes the existence of man. Evolution or another form of escape? This is what some of those who have already become a hologram are trying to understand.

Blind Cinema

An unusual group sets sail from St. Petersburg to Finland. The crew, which consists of vision-impaired people and people with normal eyesight, learns to work together in order to successfully complete their undertaking. The observational documentary shows the crew’s first contact with the boat, which is done by touch, and then follows their daily routine while at sea. The disinterested camera records a reality that overcomes our prejudices regarding the helplessness of blind people. The problem-free journey gives the sailors space for new sensations. Excerpts from the ship’s log show us aspects of the mission – i.e., the transformation of oneself that can change the world.

Chronicles of the Time of Troubles

“The film is about one of the most terrible and difficult periods in the history of Russia of the 20th century, about the 90s of the last century. For many people it was a shock. The Empire collapsed, human relations and moral values collapsed. Crime and bandits were everywhere. And ordinary people were concerned about how to survive. This period was called perestroika. The people call this time a troubled time. The film reviews social processes from within, not from the outside propaganda side. Much for the modern spectator seems strange, it seems phantasmagoric, but it was so.” -V. Eisner

Observatory

The camera glides over the blue-green mountains and suddenly picks out a silver dome on a small plateau – one of the telescopes of the Special Astrophysical Observatory, the largest and most important astronomical center in Russia. It was built half a century ago-away from the bright city lights, closer to the sky – in the mountains of the Western Caucasus in Karachay-Cherkessia. A few kilometers below is a village with panel houses, a school, a club and an administration. In a small world, lost in space and time – whether it is the Soviet seventies, or the future of the Strugatsky novels – modern artists come with their works. The film unobtrusively confronts opposites-physicists and lyricists, schoolchildren and gray-haired scientists, the dome of the telescope and the tent of the temple, artifacts and ancient mountains. But the main opposition is the small Earth and the boundless Cosmos, to which people listen with bated breath.

In Between Time

Teriberka is an ancient Pomeranian camp on the shore of the Barents Sea. Since ancient times, people lived here. They were not afraid of the long polar night, nor of the winter blizzards and storms, nor of the barrenness of the stony earth and sand. Only by sea it was possible to reach Teriberskaya Bay, where the first artels of Pomor fishermen settled on the sandy shore. At the beginning of the 21st century, Teriberka lost its status as a regional center, turning into a dying village with a surreal landscape. The taciturn inhabitants remained devoted to their native Land, which is divided and sold behind their backs, evicted from their homes and deprived of fishing. But the sea gives them inner freedom. Without looking back.
